    navigation unit

Try www.travroute.com I personally have the Pocket CoPilot for my iPAQ and it works GREAT. Has a moving map and even gives turn by turn voice directions (sounds like electronic chic). I also like the "time to destination" readout, lets you know when you will make it to your destination, so...

    Turn signal buzzes

Was the approx $40 for the part or to have the dealer replace the part? (my guess is just the part). Mine was doing this during the fall but somehow "fixed itself". However I woul like to fix it as now that Im driving my son (10 wks old) to from daycare any of the "little" issues take on...

Takes waaaaay too long to get heat

I dont have the automatic climate control but thought that the "heat" mode would not run the fan until the engine is warm to keep the system from blowing cold air on you while the engine warms up. As also stated if the temp gauge takes a long (more than 15 min at idle) to come up to temp prob a...

    Rattle in roof

Check your sunroof shade. Mine rattles (audio off, just driving down the road) with the shade open. If I close the shade the rattle disappears. I need to check and see what has come loose as this started about mid last summer.

    muffler question

Jeff, if you could post how the final install went I would appreciate it. I have a 96 4.0 and need new exhaust. I am considering the Borla but dont want it to be much louder than stock. I dont know how you would post the sound (without having it on your own web site), but if you would email...

    roof rack Question

I have the Yakama "rail rider" towers that fit into the stock Exp rails. Once I remove the bike attachments from the bars the rack works great for hauling wood up top. I use the ratcheting type web tiedowns and all is secure. When hauling 4x8 sheets of plywood I did run a strap through the...

    Sagger...

Had the driver side sag on my 96 XLT at around 60k. Adjusting the Torsion bars (up front) + driver - pass, fixed it. Now at 80k I can tell about a 1/4 differnce so I think I will swap the rear springs once the weather warms up (garage is about 23 - outside 6).

    Differential plug

A little trick my dad told me: When changing diff fluids ALWAYS remove the FILL plug FIRST. This way if you cant get the plug out (the 3/8 square holes are notorious for rounding out) you arent stuck with a empty diff and no way to fill.... :(

What is this in my heater hoses?

My '96 had the leaking heater control valve issue for about a year. It only leaked when the AC/Heat/Def selector swith was in the OFF position. I finally replaced it and the job was about 15min and $17 for the part. No more leak.

    Big green puddle

Make sure you check the heater control valve. Mine was leaking BUT only in some AC/HEAT/VENT control positions. Part is on the passenger side up near the AC condensor tank (at least on my '96). I has 4 hoses going into the valve and a vacuum control linkage. There is a good chance that if...

What do you do to prepare your truck for snow?

Rain X deicer in the windshield (and rear) fluid resevours. This stuff is GREAT. It melts the snow/ice and gives you rain X like performance without the sore shoulder.

    Can my 2wd handle beaches?

Brans, at Pismo with 2wd BE CAREFUL. You should be ok on the packed sand (beach near waterline) but if you venture into the dunes you will get stuck. I used to 4wheel (Ranger) and MX bike there and we had to air down the tires and KEEP MOVING in many places in the dunes. We still got stuck...

    Inexpensive solution to Synthetic Oil?

I no longer buy my oil (or anything else) at Wally world.... They have discontinued "used oil" dropoff... Wallmart used to have a very nice and convienent oil drop-off station out by the auto center. I asked the manager and he said that disposal was costing them too much and closing the...

    Get this, Wal-Mart sucks!

My problem with Wally World (WallMart) is that they no longer accept used motor oil. I like to change my own oil and need a place to dispose of it in a responsible mannor. I used to be able to just drive up and drop off my milk jug of oil and all was good. Now that WallMart wont accept my oil...

    antifreeze smell, no leaks HELP!!

I had this problem for a couple of months and it drove me nutz. I never saw any coolant on the floor but the level kept going down and my wife could smell "pancake syrup" at stoplights. I checked the carpet (fearing heater core....) and it was dry (thankfully). I then got lucky. I decided to...

Max Tow weight on an 96-X w/4.0L ??

With your towed weight around 3500 I would say you are ok. The bumper is rated at 3500 but I think the vehicle is slightly higher (exact rating vary all over the place but 4200 is in my mind for some reason). Believe it or not 4x4 is rated LESS than a 4x2 for towing capacity (due to the...

Max Tow weight on an 96-X w/4.0L ??

96_explorer.com, I am in the same situation as you. I have a 96 xlt 4.0 4x4 and use it to tow my boat. I actually figure my towed weight to be about 5k which I am sure is over the Max for the vehicle (if not it should be). I had a Class III 5000lb under bumper reciever installed as the...

    Towing-Air Bags vs. Helper Springs

Mike, Im right there with you on the "air shocks" + I was always told that shock mounts are not "load bearing" (shocks control movement-ossilation), springs are what carry the load. That said I have been looking for something that will not negatively affect the Exp ride without a load (95% of...

    Leeking windshield

Just an FYI I have a '96 with the original windshield and it developed a leak this winter. I tried the goo fix and that did not work. So I figured oh well I needed a new windshield (pitted somewhat)anyway. At the windshield replacement place I got the bad news.... windshield frame is...

    RoadMaster helper shocks?

Anyone try the RoadMaster Active suspension "shocks". They mount in a horizontal position and seem an alternative to a helper leaf. I am looking to retain rear ride height (only 2 in or so) when towing the boat. But dont really want to install an add-a-leaf and deal with the reduced ride...

    leaking winshield seal

Thanks for the info. I double checked the location and it indeed seems to be close the the gutter channel. I gently lifted the seal at the gutter and there is noticable deterioriation. Fortunatly I will have full access to the wifes car all next week so I am planning on letting the seal dry...

    leaking winshield seal

    Buzzing noise from turn stalk

JLM and Jason, I to have the turn stalk "buzz" problem. I replaced the flasher because for me it all started this summer while towing the boat. This did NOT fix the problem and the Ford Dealer would NOT accept a return of the $30 flasher ($30 is very high for this part!!!). I disassembled...

    Factory CD changer

Al, I too have a 96 xlt w/ 6 disk changer that fell apart. I removed it from the console and all sorts of parts fell out. You state yours is an '88, can you send a picture (I would be concerned about the connector and the physical dimensions of the unit). Thanks

    Where to find replacement pins???

    Back doors on my Explorer

Im new to the forum so Hello! I had the same problem with the rear driver side door. Turned out to be the internal portion of the black plastic handle. There is a "tab" molded into the plastic that was broken off (appeared by force). I replaced the handle (about 30min and $15 @ dealer)...
