00M12 yet again....

Ok. So I have the infamous rough idle during cold starts and the dieseling sound. I've searched, read, printed out all sorts of info related to 00M12. The problem is, because I have a 2001, I am not covered under it. Which I think is a jip on Ford's part, but that is for another time.

So I took it to my dealer, was told that the noise is the timing chain as I suspected, and that it would be $600 to do it. I do not have that kind of money, so my questions are these.

I know I can do the ONP myself. Between my Dad and I that won't be an issue. I know the part number for the kit and all that. Now,

1. Will this solve the dieseling as well, since it is for the cam chain, not the timing chain?
2. Should I replace the IAC while I have the upper manifold apart?
3. Shoud I replace anything timing chain related as in 01M01..for me TSB 04-15-4.
4. Anything else I should do while I am at it?

To put it all in perspective, my total bill would have been $1030 for the following.
$85 - reprogram PCM for new tire size of 265/75
$109 - tranny flush
$236 - parts for timing chain noise and pinion seal leak
$480 - labor for timing chain
$120 - labor for pinion seal

I told them to forget the timing chain and pinion seal, which is a whole other matter. So, will 00M12 kit fix my problem of dieseling and rough idle at start?

Any and all info is appreciated, as is bashing of Ford for not covering the 2001s that have same problem as the 2000s!!!!!!

Thanks!

You can do both the front and back Tensioners apparently with the engine in the car, I Just spoke to Ford.

Don’t know if this has always been the case but I have never head a mention of replacing the Rear one with the engine in the car before.

And yes it will as long as the guides and ECT aren’t shot as well.

Yeah, I've read that it can be done, but you better have small hands. lol. So I should just do the 00M12 first, then if that doesn't fix the noise, then worry about the timing chain kit. It's only $85 from FordPartsNetwork.com. So I guess that's what I'll do.

Anyone else have any suggestions? Thoughts?

you CAN easily do both tensioners with the engine in the car, the chains are the really hard things to do, you can even do the guides with the engine in the car, however if you need to do the rear chain then its engine out (or trany out) but the engine out option is better to the get access to everything without breaking your back. the front chain can possibly be done with the engine in the car but its real hard to press the cam splined un-keyed sprocket on, as there is nothing to pull/hit it on against!!!! thats why Ford pull the head(s) off and use those special tools to hold the timing (as there are no timing marks on anything).
