01 Explorer Sport Trac
I have an 01 sport trac and when you hit the brakes the back drum brakes lock up. They dont do it as much once i have driven it a little ways on got the brakes warmed up. I have took the tires off 4 or five times. i have adjusted the adjuster all the way down and it seems to help for a day or so. The drum looked good to me and the shoes had plenty of pad to them. Does anyone got any ideas? Thanks

Do they drag before locking up or just lock?
possibilities:
contaminated linings, rear flexible brake line internally defective not allowing pressure to release, master cylinder.

As i apply pressure it will eventually lock. if i can ease on them i meant very gently i can get the truck to stop before they lock but any sudden push on the brakes lock them.

Do they both lock up? You have not found any fluid or grease/oil on the shoes friction surface? Are the front brakes in good shape and functioning properly? Do you not get the pedal pulse from the ABS system when they lock? Do both of the indicator lights in the instrument cluster come on when you go to start the truck(red & yellow). I know, a lot of questions but something else should be indicating a problem. You either have contaminated linings/warped drums, too much pressure being applied to the rear cylinders either by defective ABS (should have a light) or transfer from another non-functioning cylinder, or pressure not being released from the previous braking application.

IMO........... anyone else with ideas feel free to jump in!

Symptom chart from the service manual:
Brake lockup under light brake pedal force:

Brake pads and shoes.
CHECK the brake pads and shoes for uneven taper or excessive wear. REPAIR as necessary.

Brake component.
CHECK the brake components for correct operation. REPAIR as necessary.

Parking brake component.
REPAIR or INSTALL new components as necessary. REFER to Parking Brake in this section.

Anti-lock brake control system.
CHECK the anti-lock brake control system. REFER to Section 206-09.

swetrid, your opinion?

About the only thing i have seen with the drum brake on Sport tracs is either contamination from wheel cylinders or axle seals. Do you know if it is Ford shoes or aftermarket. Ford had alot of problems with rear brake shoes on rangers and f150s and came out with new brake shoes and sealing up all surfaces so no moisture gets in. Here is the tsb for rangers which can show you the points to seal up.

09-13-12 GRABBING CONDITION FROM REAR DRUM BRAKES

Publication Date: June 29, 2009

FORD: 2002-2009 Ranger

This article supersedes TSB 8-6-7 to update the vehicle model years.

ISSUE:
Some 2002-2009 Ranger vehicles may exhibit a grabbing condition from the rear brakes during the first few brake applications. The condition only occurs after the vehicle has been parked for several hours.

ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

To service, reduce/minimize moisture intrusion into the rear drum brake assemblies by applying Motorcraft® Silicone Gasket and Sealant to the brake backing plate.

Place vehicle on hoist and remove the rear wheels.
Remove the rear brake drums and replace the rear linings. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 206-02.
WARNING: Do not breathe dust or use compressed air to blow dust from storage containers or friction components. Remove dust using government-approved techniques. Friction component dust may be a cancer and lung disease hazard. Exposure to potentially hazardous components may occur if dusts are created during repair of friction components, such as brake pads and clutch discs. Exposure may also cause irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and may cause allergic reactions and/or may lead to other chronic health effects. If irritation persists, seek medical attention or advice. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.

Inspect the rear brake assemblies for damaged, missing and/or improperly seated adjuster plug or parking brake cable.
Inspect and clean the lining contact area of the brake drum; machine if necessary.
Install the rear brake drums and adjust the lining to drum clearance per WSM, Section 206-02.
Thoroughly clean the backside of the rear drum brake backing plate to promote proper adhesion of sealant.
Apply Motorcraft® Silicone Gasket and Sealant to the backside of the rear drum brake backing plate at the following interface areas (Figure 1):
Axle Flange
Wheel Cylinder
Parking Brake Cable
Hold Down Pins

Figure 1 - Article 09-13-12

NOTE: AVOID GETTING SEALANT ON THE BRAKE BLEED SCREW AND BRAKE TUBE NUT.

Install the rear wheels and torque lug nuts per WSM, Section 204-04.

Yes it seems that they both lock. I have found no liquid grease or anything else on the friction surface. The front brakes are in good shape and I have gotten the pulse from the abs only in the snow when I was locking it up to see how slick the road was. The abs pulsed and the back ones still locked. As far as a dry road I never hit them that hard to lock the front; the back lock up and I let off of them before that happens. Yes both red and yellow lights come on when I start the truck, and they go off immediately however the yellow ABS lights stays on two to three seconds longer than the red brake light. I have seen the ABS light come on a couple of times but it goes off as soon as I turn the truck off and it will not turn back on. They are aftermarket shoes.

Also i have noticed that the abs light is comming on and staying on (until i restart the truck up) after i am spinning alot in 2wd in the snow.

any other ideas anyone? I have noticed that it does not lock as bad as the weather warms up. dont know if it has anything to do with it.

I got the same proplem. Although before the ABS light comes on the ABS kicks in at a stop up to 30mph then turns on. I want to replace the sensor, but every shop around me says its a dealer item only. If the dealer wants $40-$60 i'll find one on ebay.

If you have 4 wheel abs and your rear brakes are locking up it is usualy your rear abs sensor in the rear differential they are known for it. It will be the sensor on top of the rear differential that senses a tone ring inside the the housing usaualy 20 - 30 dollars at carquest, advance auto , auto zone , etc good luck
