I have been working on my 2001 (old body style) ford explorer with the 5.0 V8. I was doing a tune up when one of my spark plugs broke off in the block. I have since got the plug out using an easy out and lots of heat. After I got it out I used a magnet to check for shavings and made sure the cylinder was clear. I put all of the new plugs an wires in and when I started it up there was a knock. After playing around with the wires and plugs we got the order down but the knock still remained. I was working on it at a buddys house and drove it home. After I got home I let it sit and when I restarted it the knock stopped and now there is a STRONG smell of exhaust. Is it possible that the manifold has crack or even broken due to the tune up? I'm just looking for an explanation to whats going on. I also have a misfire but I am going to recheck all the wire connections tomorrow.

Typical spot for the 5.0 exhaust manifold to crack is on the passenger side, between 2 and 3. Drive it for awhile (few days), then check the manifold (after it cools down) for a "sooty" spot. You may also see a spot on the heat shield. If you see one, its a clear indication of a crack.
