01 Explorer Sport Trac
the wipers on my sport trac will not work. Also, the 4x4 will not engage. It will not respond in any way when turning the switch. No lights, not a noise, no nothing! I've been reading some on here and think it might be the 4x4 Module? I could be wrong. Any ideas? I've checked all fuses and they seem to be ok. Thanks...

dont let the luxurious word "GEM" fool you they're llike the "GEM" on a woman's finger expensive and a never ending pain.

they break they are expensive and they are connected to many things like wipers, 4X4, etc.

So this GEM should take car of both problems? Any idea where to get one for a decent price? Thanks.

Anyone know the part number for the GEM module for an 01 sport Trac 4x4? I got in my dash to check for myself and it seems to haw been replaced with a 4x2 GEM module. NO WONDER MY 4x4 doesn't work! Now, I'm pretty positive that this truck has 4x4! I have a picture of this part in my dash. If anyone knows the part number or where I can get the correct part number I'd be grateful! Thanks!

Thanks I appreciate it! No one has got it yet.

Zach

I called the dealership today and they said the part number was 1L5Z-13C-78-AA. I'm
Assuming this is correct. In this case there is a totall differen GEM module installed on mine at the moment. If anyone knows where or has one of these please let me know! Thank you!

Think you left out a number, 1L5Z-13C788-AA. What number is on yours? The original part number, 1L5Z-14B205-AA is replaced by 1L5Z-13C788-AA. The Ford Parts Manual doesn't differentiate between 4x2 and 4x4 either. These are Job 2 numbers.

The numbers for a Job 1 are XL2Z-14B205-BB which is replaced by XL2Z-14B205-BC
(Before July 24, 2000)

Which is your 2001?

There is a new Job 1 GEM on eBay for $55.00 ! ! ! (# OFF THE PART MUST MATCH XL2T-14B205-B* (*ANY LETTER AFTER "B"). )

The part # that's in my 01 sport Trac now is Y2LT-14B205-BB. Is this even the correct part? I assume not since my 4x4 and wipers aren't working. So are you saying it doesn't matter that it says "sport utility 4x2" on the part and it should still work with my 4x4? Thanks for your help and quick reply.

Check your part number as I can find no reference to Y2LT-14B205-BB anywhere, only XL2Z-14B205-BB. That being said, my Factory Parts manual is a 2003 printing and it's "possible/probable" that revisions have been made to some numbers. If I Google the number of you GEM the only thing that comes up is your post.

No, my manual does not specify 4x2 or 4x4.

What is the production date of your Sport Trac? If it's a July 2000 date then PM me your VIN so I can determine the DAY.

Thanks for the PM.
OK, your build day is 06/29/2000 so you have a Job 1 version.

Did you give the dealership parts tech the VIN (did they ask for it?) or the number off of your GEM (which is an engineering number)?

Since you're certain of the engineering number on yours this really baffles me ...... but that's not unusual :confused::D

I have an e-mail in for some expert advise, will post as soon as I get it.

Okay, here is is from an impeccable source.

The YL2T-BB GEM was used for the first six months of production (Jan 31, 2000-Jul 23, 2000) Sport Tracs and Sports. It was also used on 1999-2001(old body) Explorers and Mountaineers. Unfortunately, it has been discontinued and not replaced. Hope this helps.

So there are the junkyard hunting options. You might also post in the Parts Wanted section here. Good luck.

Uh oh! Do I absolutely have I match the part number from the current GEM that I have now? There is not another one out there that's compatible? If not, looks like I'll be searching junk yards and parts wanted because I need wipers and 4x4! Shoot! Thanks again for all your help.

Zach

That's the story. I wish you luck. But, there are a lot of 1999-2001(old body) Explorers and Mountaineers out there in the salvage yards now after the cash for clunkers fiasco!

Ok, thank you! One last thing...so this part YL2T will still allow my 4x4 to work even though it says sport utility 4x2 on the part? Thanks

I requested verification of the part number for your VIN but I supplied him with your VIN in the initial e-mail. I'd assume he checked it but we'll make sure. It will be tomorrow before I hear from him now though.

Actually though, looking at the wiring schematic, I do not see the GEM playing a part in the 4WD.

He just verified the part number is correct for your VIN.

Also, you have mail @ your aol #
