Hey everyone... I am stumped. My truck started up Sat just fine and drove it for about 5 mins before I had to turn back around and go home for something. Went back to start and nothing. Cranks but wont start. I smell gas when trying to crank. When it did run after it wouldnt start, it revs fine, feels normal but the exhaust doesn't smell normal. After revving the rpms would stay high at 2000 even after I took my foot off the gas then drop back down to normal. If I shut it off and try to re-start, it just cranks. Feels like it wants to start after the first try then dies. Try again and it just cycles. Any ideas?

Here's some background on the truck

Spark plugs changed - May-Jun 2013
3 Coil Packs changed - 2012 to 3013 CEL would come on and off. Was off then this occurred and was still off when the truck was running

clogged cats?
Misfire?
Injectors?
Idle Air control valve?

You could have some other issue going on, but have a compression test done to see if you lost compression on one side (bank) of the motor, could be a timing chain issue if zero compression is found. You have the same symptoms as I did recently, engine cranks over, but doesn't fire up and you can smell gas fumes in the air. The gas fumes you smell are from the cylinders, combustion chamber being flooded with gas and not igniting. My problem turned out to be the rear timing chain. MY vehicle ran fine with no previous warning signs or CEL's and great oil pressure prior to crapping out on startup. I also change the oil and filter religiously, sooner than necessary.
:(

I hope it is not that. I had the front chains done last summer. I actually got the truck started yesterday while holding the ignition open and letting it crank. Acted like it wanted to start but like it had ran out of gas? So I put some gas in it, only had a 1 gallon can but it sorta worked. Stuttered a but to start but it finally turned over. Idled fine drove it a little, was like normal. However, the system detected a engine temperature failure. The water temp gauge was not working at all. Said sensor error. I was reading that this sensor tells the pcm what air/fuel ratio to put out.... I am thinking this may be the issue. I will clean the IAC and then tackle the sensor which is under he intake manifold I believe

You dont have a rear chain on the 4.6L
And the front chain is not that prone to failure - plus it wouldnt run well once finally started as you indicated it did.
My guess (if its not sensor related) and it shouldnt be, as your in open loop mode when cold, is that you have bad fuel and or a clogged filter.
