Although your symptoms are somewhat different from other "4X4 problems" posted in this forum, the 4X4 control module (CM) being the source of your problem is still a good bet. The module is a circuit board that, depending on which component on that board goes bad, would give different symptoms, particularly where lights and indicators are concerned. Otherwise you have the switch, fuses, wires, and shift motor to pick from....

your right I took the explorer to the shop and it pulled code b1342 electronic module failure.

also if you can pass this on my trans was slipping 1-2 2-3 shift the mech adjusted bans and reprogramed computer and is going to do a trans flush and filter replacment. He told me that the trans gets use to the way you drive and has to be reset and the computer has to be erased. He said if i put a brand new trans in that it would still slip if you dont erase the memory of the computer. So i suggest if you do have the trans flushed have the computer erased and reset.

I had the tranny flushed this summer and other than slippage when leaving the dealer (I immediately manually shifted thru the gears) it hasn't happened again. Flushing won't affect computer settings and I don't buy the mechs excuse that the computer learns to make the transmission slip. Based on other peoples comments, I probably blew my 4X4 CM when disconnecting/connecting my battery during a front brake job so I won't be disconnecting the battery anytime soon.

On another note, I've had a significant drop in gas mileage since swapping the 4X4 CM (about 4 mpg). It also seems to downshift more frequently. Any other 4X4 CM victims had this?

I have an issue with my 2002 going into 4x4 Low all on its own. And sometimes when im turning lightly I lose ALL engagement. In fact my X is down the street right now with this issue. I can't get my tranny to engage ANY gear. Its like in neutral everywhere, even park. I sometimes can mess with the 4x4 Auto High and Low buttons and I could here the gears engage, but this time in totally stuck. It wont go into any gear.

Could this also be the CM?

How did they reset the 4X4 CM?

you can't reset the cm, he reset the computer.

I just disconnected the battery and it came back to life. Im buying a new tranfer case module, that seems to be where my problem is.
