Hey....I've researched the forums about these errors. I have:

1) checked PCV hoses and PCV. All good
2) replaced air filter and cleaned MAF.
3) tightend all clamps after MAF
4) checked all other hoses around intake
5) did a battery reset to remove codes
6) started truck, sprayed ALOT of carb cleaner around intake and all hoses, no surging, so this eliminates vacuum leak.

CEL did not come on yet, but I've cleared the codes before and it stayed off for a day, but then came back. THis morning it was -11 below and the truck would not stay running. I had to hold the throttle at 3500 rpms until it warmed up for it to run right. My gas milage as started to suck badly to the point where I'm at 1/4 tank left and I've only gone 165 hwy miles. Do you think the 02 sensers are actually bad in my case? Oh, truck has 49000 miles only. ANy help with this problem is appreciated.

What engine do you have?

4.0 Sohc Explorer Sport.

Welcome to this forum! It might be the intake manifold gaskets. Check # 51 in my list of useful threads for more information: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=177975

Hey, thanks, I'll check that out. I do alot of work on Mustangs including custom tuning them, and in my experiences, if there was an intake gasket leak, spraying the carb cleaner near the leak would surge the engine. However, I don't have any experience on these 4.0's. I sprayed the crap out of this thing and nothing happend. How difficult is it to changed the gaskets on these?

Brook....I took off the MAF again and sprayed with brake cleaner, reset the EEC and tried again. CEL was gone for 2 days, but just returned this am. In your opinion, is it more likely the upper gaskets or the lower gaskets? And is it just a gasket issue? Whats the deal with the 00m012 recall? Would a recall like that still be available for my year?

Thanks

49K on the wires and plugs. Whats wierd is, the codes go away when I cleaned the MAF, reset the EEC. It took 2 days to come back. I would think a plug/wire issue would throw it right away.

its a PITA because I can do most stuff myself. I called Ford about the 00m12 recall and they said I need to bring it in for a 112.00 diagnostic test and if they determine that isnt the cause, I can never use that recall again. So I am kinda stuck here, but the gas milage is HORRIBLE!

Are they OEM plugs and wires or aftermarket Double Platinum plugs? Double Platinums will only go about 60,000 miles so if that's what they are it's conceivable they could need changing.

Here's my response to your recent PM: The only thing I could think of is that the leak from the gaskets might be temperature related. Parts expand when they get hot. Does this problem happen when the engine gets hot? Autozone checks codes for free, so you might be able to save on the dealer's diagnostic fee if you haven't already let them scan it.

I posted a reply to your PM
