i assume your talking about the rear end whine? that is caused by wear on the ring and pinion gear, the diff isnt going to expload or fail (mine has wined for several years w/o incident) some people have luck with a fluid change, and others go so far as to pick up a new or rebuilt diff and have it installed, there are rebuilt units for sale by a member of the site for 800-1000 bucks depending on GR's and if its LSD or open. But to be honest i cant see myself dropping so much cash for a mear annoyance.. but to each their own.

is it hard to replace them parts?

ive heard people have replaced the rear differential with fairly common tools in 5-7 hours... replacing the ring and pinion gear inside the diff is a different story... VERY precise work, and VERY time consuming to do propperly, a dealership would want 1000-1300 bucks in just labor for such a job.

did you ever do anything to stop the whine?

lol i installed aftermarket exhaust and turned the radio up louder :salute:. But seriously i changed my fluid and didnt notice anything, Im going to wait for it to fail and then im going to buy a rebuilt off the forum and install that one.

Rear Diff

Mine actally started to come apart while driving in town. I relpaced it. Was a Linited Slip, but they have a habit of this happening. So I put in a standard diff & sed 85W140 oil (not synthetic) & have not had any noise since or problems. Thed LS diffs are the problem. Change it before it leaves you stranded. Do not get another LS. Get a standard diff.

Instead of getting rid of the LS all together, I would suggest looking at an aftermarket LS if you don't want the stock one. If it is the clutches that worry you, Eaton makes a gear-driven LS called the true-trac. I have one in my F150 and love it. No clutches. Never needs a rebuild. Plus if you are getting rid of the stock LS you have to buy an open carrier. Why not spend just a little more and get a better LS?

more info norsman? a link maybe? that sounds like a winner to me for when i blow my stock LS out here in the next year.

You can also google reviews of the true-trac to get other opinions. Overall it seems that the general concensus is that it is the best LS on the market. Like I said, I have one and love it. My F150 is 2wd, so I got the true-trac for the MN winters. It's a night and day difference in the snow, which is why I would recommend against going to an open diff.

I just want to be clear, I was responding to aviator's post regarding getting rid of the stock LS. I think the true-trac is a great piece of equipment, but I am not that afraid of the stock LS. I personally plan to rebuild the stock track-lock in my explorer (using carbon fiber SVT clutches) in the near future, because new clutches are much cheaper than a new carrier. But, if you are set on replacing the factory LS, the true-trac is definitely the way to go. Good luck with whatever you decide!

thank you much, i think i will end up going with one of these, and a set of ford racing 1:4.10 gears for when i finaly break down and drop 13 grand in engine and trans performance parts.
