Welcome to this forum! I've renamed your thread, and moved it into the Ranger section. Use a small screwdriver to pry the clips out. The new filter should come with 2 new clips.
The 02 Ranger has a different type filter connection and new clips do not come with the filter. If you break the clips/connectors you will end up having to put on a new fuel line.
They are fairly easy to get off once you know how. Take a look at the connectors. You should see some orange or green elongated button like tabs. You can use a screw driver to push this in but I find using my thumb nail works well. It also helps to push the connector toward the filter before pushing in on the orange/green tab. While holding the tab in, pull the connector away from the filter and it should slide right off. Do this to each of the three lines and then you can change the filter.
It is also a good idea to relieve the pressure before disconnecting the fuel line. My preference is to remove the fuel pump fuse with the engine running and let it run until it dies from fuel starvation.
Hello RED FX4, wish I had read your post before I attempted to change my filter!! the ends were so brittle that when I squeezed them with plyers (wrong) they broke (Bummer) there is , however, a splice in, type of connector now. I decided to do all three since I broke two, well needless to say it was a pain in the a** you have to cut the lines to length, using a supplied metal ribbed connector between the lines, after soaking them (fuel line ends) in boiling water for 10 minutes ( which is no easy feat laying under the truck bending the fuel line down into the water) then push them into the lines. I did the clip side first so that was not to bad (didn't need to be under the truck) the fuel line side is another story. Oh well it worked and now the retainer clips are easy to replace, should I have another senior moment. Got the parts from napa for around $55.00 cheaper than new fuel lines. and it cured the hard starting problem. just thought I would share this. Ray..
