02 Sport Rattling

Ok, so my buddy and fellow member of explorer forum, supraman, rolled his 02 sport SOHC 5 spd manual last friday. The body is in bad shape but we are trying to see what we can do about getting this thing back on the road. There is minimal damage above the left front tire roof and right side. The engine is fine and starts up fine. It smoked at first but once it all burned up the smoke stopped. But, it has started making a loud rattling noise with the speed of the engine under the car near the front of the transmission. It sounds alot like a rattling i hear when i start up my 99 Sport OHV but much louder. Mine is loud on start up but once the RPM levels it is quiet and not noticeable. His is loud throughout and loudest between 2000 and 3000 RPM. Any ideas on what this could be? Can we get this X back on the road?
