03 explorer starter seems bound

Car would just bump for a quarter second then the starter wires started smoking. Replaced the starter. New one did same thing but after bumping a few times it cranked. When cranked there was a knocking almost like something hitting the bolts inside but not sure what's going on. Correct bolts were used for starter. The starter bumping sounds like it's up against something and binding up.

Blown engine? Waterlocked?

Try cranking with all of the spark plugs removed.

Oh, maybe the tourq converter came apart.

Took starter off and checked all the nuts on the flex plate. Everything was tight.

How are the nuts on the flex plate accessible with the starter "off"? Unless you are referring to the nuts securing the torque converter.

It may be for torque converter. They are going through the flex plate and are visible from where the starter mounts.

That is normally how the torque converter is unfastened from the flexplate. imp
