i need to get my explorer inspected and i recently have started having some issues. when driving i hear an odd noise coming from the engine area. not sure if it's the alternator or a pulley but i also notice a whistling/humming noise with that. also noticed a lot of oil around the engine..mainly the front, there is lot on the lower half of the alternator, another thing i notice is i see some smoke coming from the tail pipe after i shut the engine off almost everytime i drive. should i be worried about all of this. i really don't have a clue what all this would cost to fix or is it worth fixing. it has 130,x.. miles

Other than the noise, and oil leaks, smoke, How does it drive? Power seem normal? Any pinging or knocking? Idle level or up and down? If the alternator has oil all over the bottom, thats most likely the cause of the noises there. Kind of sounds like you have a blown lower intake gasket if its throwing oil out there. It only smokes from the exhaust when you shut it off? What color is the smoke, how long does it smoke, and liquid other than maybe a small amount of clear liquid from the exhaust? Hows the oil level?

i looked over it today a little more..when idling and parked..i don't hear any noise....i give it some gas and still no noise. but as im driving i hear it. if i give a little more gas the noise stops but if i let my foot off and coast i hear the noise its odd. oil level is good i just checked it. i check it regular and it may take a half a quart to a quart between oil changes. as for the smoke its white not heavy and only lasts for a bit..under a minute i would say

and it drives fine and power seems the same
