The speedometer in my chevy is jacked up. It will go up as you drive but wont go back down when I slow down. After a mile of driving it says I am doing 110 mph while I am a dead stop. Now each time I start the truck it will go down about 10 mph each time. So when it is stuck at 110 if I start the truck then turn it off around 11 times it will go back to zero. As sson as I start driving again it will do the same thing. The odometer works fine and seems to track miles travel accurate. Any ideas?

I would go trade it for a Ford. :D

I figure the instrument cluster is your culprit. The speed sensor in the rear end seems to be ok if the speedo works OK for a while. There may be a resistor or solder bad on the speedo section. I would see if you can find a junk yard cluster cheap enough, swap it in and see what it does. If that fixes it, swap over the odometer.

Is your odometer working correctly?

Check the teeth on speedo gear mabee.

Pretty sure it is electric.

Did you see the second to last sentence? :D Odometer is workig fine as well as the computer calibrated mpg both average and instant. I am thinking it is the instrument cluster as well. So if i need a new one, if i get one from an Hd truck with the built in trans temp guage I wonder if all the wiring is there and just need to add a sensor.

As far as get a ford, I dont like the triton engines and dont like the 6.0 PSD. Plus the dealers wanted $3k more for a ford then I got my chevy for. I have 83k miles so far and other then the speedo and the CD player quit working (under warrenty) otherwise it has been a great truck. Next truck I get after this one will probably be a chevy with the 6.0 instead of the 5.3 I have now.

You guys are all a bunch of useless help :D Anyway I found out that it is a stepper motor in the cluster that is bad. It seams to be a pretty common problem. I found a guy on ebay that changes them out and updates it much cheaper then a dealer will. He will also add a trans temp guage to the dash as well. Goes right in the factory spot.

Yup thats the part that sucks. However I can still drive the truck with out the cluster installed. I just wont know how fast I am going. However to be a few hundred bucks cheaper then the dealer AND get a trans temp guage installed. I can live without guages for about a week. Now I just need to find a week to do it.

That sucks Matt, my Chevy has some electrical gremlins too. I got the parking brake light flashing at me like the brake is still engaged and the chime is constantly going off when the truck is in motion. Also, the daytime running lights don't come on...it's supposed to when you release the parking brake so somehow that's all tied in together.
Sorry 'bout the hijack:p: but I feel your pain on Chevy's...great running trucks but seems their elec. systems leave something to be desired:rolleyes:

So too all you smucks I got it fixed. I pulled the cluster out friday shipped it to CT and got it back Tuesday. pretty darn fast. I had them add the trans temp guage. It read 150 degrees all the way up and back to LAX today. The sender and wiring is all done but for some stupid reason Chevy wouldnt put a trans temp guage in half ton trucks.

It wasn't even an option unless you got a 3/4ton or one ton. Even then I think it was an option available only with the towing or plow package. I got a plug in trans temp for $60 so I am pretty happy.

I just remembered, if you have access to a GM TECh2 you can do a cluster sweep. This will move the needles from far left to far right or vise versa. If you demand it on via through the body control module and instrument cluster module, then you know your gauge is bad. I did this on a cadillac that had a bad oil pressure gauge.
