'04 Eddie Bauer AWD w/4.6 MPG

We're now looking at buying a 1 owner 04 AWD w/4.6. I'm curious on what highway mpg to expect.

The 8-cylinder 4.6L engine will likely get you between 14-17mpg overall. Treat her well, oil her up, use good gas, and she can sometimes pull up to 21mpg on the highway at reasonable speeds.

Those estimates are the best we'll ever get, since everyone experiences slight variances.

When I drive our 4.6 consistantly I get close to 17 in combined city/highway driving. When my son drives it, it's closer to 14.

Best I've ever gotten was 21mpg on a 200 mile trip. Worst I ever got was 15mpg in strong wind up and down in elevation with O/D disabled. Average I'd say is 18-19 at 65mph highway and 16-17 at 75mph interstate. This is an 02 AWD 4.6 with >140k.

Thanks for the info. We ended up passing on the Explorer. I didn't want to take the chance on driving it 300 miles with an unknown issue in the tranny. The search goes on for now.
