I've got a 2005 explorer 4.0L from my friend,he told me there was some wrong with the stock ford explorer starter and suggests me to test it carefully.I find the explorer starter is not turning the flywheel.
I don't know much about cars but I'm trying to learn about my car. Many blogs or thread have discussed Why Your Car Won’t Start? I check the battery fully charged.
I really think is something wrong with this old starter, right ? What else should I test ?
Ideas/insight would be WONDERFUL!
Thanks

Does the starter sound like it's doing anything? Can you turn the engine with a socket on the front crank bolt? Disconnect the starter from the bellhousing and have someone do the key while you hold the starter to see if it spins. (Hold tight, they have a lot of torque.)

Test the starter first to see if it is working. Then install it and bypass the battery cables by using your jumper cables as battery cables. If it starts with the jumper cables then hook up you battery cables and see if it works. If not then you probably have a bad pos. battery cable.(make sure you neg. cable is clean and grounded good. Make sure you pos. cable is also clean.)
After exclude the battery, connections and solenoid, then the only problem is the starter itself. You could try Hexautoparts to find a high quality ford explorer starter.
Good luck.
