'05 XLT larger tires

I have a stock '05 XLT 2wd with factory wheels and tires. I want to put larger tires on the stock wheels. If I want to go to bigger tires that would look more substantial, but still give a good street ride, what size can I go to in the XLT? The guy at the tire shop seemed to want to go to the max as if he were doing it for himself. Any suggestions?

...btw, i'm not totally familiar with the newer stock 4x2 ranger's, but if you have torsion bars you could run 31x10.50's and max., 33x10.50's...you can do a search for torsion twist...
