Is it possible to remove the center console safely (for a rural postal job), so I will still keep the rear heating as well as be able to slide over to the passenger side safely so I can pass mail out that side (if that makes any sense)?

You can remove the console between the seats but sliding over to the passenger window and putting mail into a box seems problematic. Have you considered buying an old bench seat beater front wheel drive car? They can be had dirt cheap and will use far less gas then your Explorer.

Maybe like a Focus or a Cavalier wagon?

You might have to go back to the 1990s or earlier to find one. I see them for sale quite often on Facebook, Craigs List etc. and usually for under $1.5k. Sometimes well under. Something like this?

Crown Vics run forever and get decent gas mileage. Maybe a Buick, Oldsmobile etc.

Anyone else have any input as far as a bench seater to look for?

Here are a few. Basically, about any car with a column shift will have bench seats.

Thank you for the help, that will give me an idea of what to look for. Theres someone selling a 07 Jeep Compass with 88k on it but I have heard mixed things about those models.

I don't think the Compass has bench seats. Plus, they are not the most reliable vehicle one can buy.

If you need a 4WD and want to stay with the Explorer model, you might consider the 2005 model since those had the shifter on the column. Might want to avoid the 6 cyl. engine and find a V8 since the gas mileage is about the same. Is 4WD essential?

Don't now how you would deal with the gear shift on the 06 and up models, since it sits right where you'd be trying to slide across.

I don't BELIEVE that the 4wd is an absolute. The carrier route is rural, but not sub-rural where I would be climbing crazy unplowed roads in the winter. Does the 05 have the center console mixed in with rear heating like my 06 does?

My 2002 had a column shifter and the console had rear vents running through it. I believe this was a standard feature in all 3rd gen Explorers/Mountaineers.

Yes they do have the vents but those can easily be either disconnected or re-routed. You would need to build something to bridge the gap between the two seats also, which should cover over the vent plumbing if you choose to leave it intact.

I was biking some gravel roads in rural Oregon yesterday and crossed paths with a 4x4 jeep delivering mail. I am certain the driver was on the right side of the vehicle like a standard postal van.
I can't remember if I had the GoPro on then. If I can confirm with footage, I'll post.

Maybe look for a 2nd gen explorer. The center console comes out easy, and you could possibly grab a bench seat from a ranger and bolt it in.

Most postal workers here just end up getting a Right hand drive car. Kinda hard but not impossible to find
