Graybeard here. I have a 92 Explorer with about 230,000 miles and the 4.0 still has great compression... the blow down compresion tests are excellent still. Oil? I have run variously always run 10/30 and 10/40 Dino in spring/summers and sometimes 20/50 in the hottest part of the year and 10/30 or 5/30 syn in winter (I live in Sacramento but my Explorer in winter sees a lot of Sierra time). I change oil every 3,000 miles except once I do Syn for winter i tend to leave it from Dec thru April (under 6000- 7500 miles usually and a LOT less now as my baby ages and I am getting to the mtns less...)
Dunno if this helps anyone, but it has worked for me on many vehicles over the years.
ps. I'll probably get killed for saying this, but about every 5th or 6th oil change about a week prior I will add half a quart of ATF to the oil to clean out the engine and change it out in a week.
pps. I still think oil change interval is as important as oil type. (awaiting yet another flame.... and NO I have never done an oil analysis on my Explorer. We do them regularly on an airplane I share with other folks tho - but for a different reason.)
