Well, our 1995 XLT turned 100,000 miles yesterday. Even though we have had some frustrating problems (i.e. 2 tranny rebuilds within 16 months), it has been a reliable piece of machinery. Everyone on the board has been extremely helpful in helping diagnose some minor problems that I was able to fix myself or talk to a mechanic about intelligently. Thank you everyone. Here's to another 100,000 miles.

Congrats!
My 91 just hit 100,000 last month. Usually when my cars made it to 100,000 I celibrated by driving / pushing it to the junk yard.

Just Joined Your Club

G'Day,

I've just joined the 100,000 Mile Club but only 300,000+ miles ago. Yep, that thing is still going at 410,000 and climbing. 300+ thousand was put on the vehicle during the last three years. I am guilty of not maintaining the vehicle properly.

List of repairs to date:

- auto-xmission rebuild at 80k for $1,600 at Aamco;
xmission fluid wasn't changed at proper intervals
- plug,wires,pvc,air filter changed every 50+k
- oil changed at every 4k - yep, should be 2.5k or 3k
- more tyre changes than one can imagine
- intake manifold gasket at 100K
- coolant flush ever 100k
- positive battery cable replaced at 200k
- fixed silly vacuum leaks
- more cleanings than one can imagine
- hundreds of light-bulb changes
- replaced altenator because the devil made me do it
- hundreds of fillups - No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims

Things I couldn't change:

Stranded - stranded twice; ran out of fuel. Need to learn to keep an eye on the fuel gauge.

Driver's seat - looks like a vicious werewolf fight happened on every full moon...seat covers added.

Rear windows - cable broken in both rear window assemblies preventing window operation...too lazy to bore out the revits to fix.

Ashtrays - Smoker friends "lifted" astrays from rear door and fitted them into their own explorers.

Cruise Control - that pesky Cruise Control "on" button is missing - I use a blunt plastic pin now. Possibly ripped off, too. Can't find a replacement "on" button but found replacement friends.

Leaking Power Stering Pump - needs fluid every 20 or 30K - kind-of annoying.

Shocks - original ones still there but practically useless off road and a boat ride on the freeway...waaaaay cewl to most, a sea-sick stomach churn to others.

AC needs refilling possibly changed to new standard. Was using 4 by 40...All 4 windows down at 40 mph.

Should replace fuel sys parts: Fuel Regulator, Filter, O2 Sensor, etc. but didn't.

Removal of favorite Beatles CD stuck in aftermarket CD player...I know the tunes by heart.

Oh, a layoff has prevented me from setting this XLT free to the great junkyard in the sky but I'll definitely be buying another or at least another product from Ford. We need something that can tow the whole neighborhood since I've towed other cars and helped more people relocate than Starvin-Students Movers.

I think that the mileage was due to the fact that we never race the engine no more than necessary. Everything was treated gently (except driver's seat). If it died right now, I wouldn't be upset at all. Just want another Ford but can't justify the cost of a new truck right now but will still keep the old. Ford should give people with "X" amount of mileage a price break on a new one for promoting their product. Wife and I realise that if it's still pushing; it should be driven; if we push it; recycle it. After all the abuse; the XLT still runs better than our last car, a FIAT (Fix It Again Tony) which sadly never broke the 100K barrier.

Happy Fording!

That's utter insanity!!!!!! My 95 X has 105k on it and it has never had a tranny rebuild or any other parts replaced and it runs damn good. Just thought Id share that...

Take Care of that tranny

Yep,

The problem with my XLT was between the driver's seat and the steering wheel. Had I taken care of the XLT it wouldn't have needed the tranny rebuilt at only 80k. When Ford gives a maximum load capacity for towing; it is best to abide... Oh, change the juice as recommended and it will run pretty far. Could have saved 1,600 dead presidents in the process but that was a long time ago. I've gotten great use of the truck...have a feeling she'll go well over 500k, too.

Many Thanks

I've got 103K on mine and so far all that's been done is a installation of manual hubs for the 4 wheel drive to replace the broken auto hubs. Mines going in for gears in the diffs in the next week or two to help save the Tranny. My temp guage gets up there when pulling 2 dirt bikes with 32" tires on my ride.

I am also now a member of the 100K mile club. I have about 105K and am still running strong. tranny went on my at 91K. i have owned the vehicle since 72K and have kept very good care of it. Was sort of suprised tranny went out. Previous owner did tow a lot, but he put in red line high temp synthetic tranny fluid at 50K so I figured it would have been ok. Only problem now is a rough idle condition on hot startup.

yeh mine has 115K on it. still runs great. well the tranny is startin to slip, but other then that its good. and i had to replace the rotors and the sawy bar brackets. my shocks are going to crap too. but other then that it runs great. well except it hesitates and backfires alot. and it feels like someone stuck a honda civic engine in it. until 40 miles an hour my car backfires and has a loss of power.
but all in all it still runnin strong =)

no problems with mine. it's closing in on 150K.

1200 posts!!

We rolled over 100K on July 27th, and I was the one who did it too :)

300,000 mile club?

any one else with me? there used to be a member a while back who had about 10k more than i did but im afraid ive lost contact with him, any one else got that many?

BTW- i jsut rebuilt my first tranny at 310k, still origianl engine

ok i found out who it was, EB Bauer, ill see how many miles hes up to now

tac0meat, is you explorer automatic or manual transmission? 310K, wow.

BamBam has 156K now. ALL STOCK. And it HAS been abused. (Not be me, of course :P )

Tanny's good, engine's great, 4 wheelin' fool!!

The only think I've seen is that my power steering gear box is leaking bad. First owner liked to use tranny fluid instead of steering fluid, so I guess the gaskets are "awl et up".

My driver's seat is sagging pretty bad, so when I go wheelin', I sit on a phone book. (That's sad, cuz I'm 6'2")

I'm at 169k with the Ex., only on the 2nd tranny. 110k on the Ranger with the 2nd clutch. 300k, man that's wild!

118K mi on the 91 Ranger, replaced one battery, one solenoid, one starter, one fan belt, one set of plugs and wires, one clutch slave and two clutch master cylinders, several sets of tires and headlight bulbs.

it's looking for a new home if anyone is interested.

My 96 EB V6 just turned over 165000. Just bought it about 3 months ago at 160k. Seems to have been maintained VERY well. Only problems I can Identify so far are:

1) Probably need ball joints.
2) parking brake does nothing (irritates the wfe)
3) Power Steering is noisy
4) Seems to downshift a lot on the highway in cruise! 2 average size adults and 2 kids.

I'm new to X's so I don't know how normal some of this stuff is, or how hard it is to fix. I have purchased a Haynes, but WOW there's a lot of stuff under there! My other car is an MG, which I know inside out. These new vehicles, Geesh!

Also, I'm unsure about the actual mileage on the vehicle. Console computer will click off 1/10's of a mile while sitting still. Analog speedo seems accurate, not real sure about the ODO.

Speed Sensor???

Mine is up to 205k. Original Tranny and engine. The tranny is going though, and will need to be rebuilt soon. I have abused the hell out of my truck.

We have 415,000 on 91 XLT

I've posted earlier about joining the 100+ club. We have 415,000 on the 91 XLT 4L 2x4. The miles were put on the vehicle in the last 3 years. We've had one transmission rebuild (trans-fusion) mainly because I didn't change the juice at the proper interval for the large loads that we towed. The vehicle runs fine with the exception of some interior components like the driver's seat, missing ashtrays, and my fav Beatles CD stuck in the CD player. Besides that, it gets about 500 miles per week in usage with very good mileage for a truck of that size. Need to replace power stering pump to stop leakage but we just keep adding fluid. The truck starts reliably EVERY SINGLE TIME in the morning, noon, and night. Oh, with the exception of being stranded twice for runing out of fuel. How do we install a fuel warning light?

This truck was used for towing a small trailer. We want another but the price is soooo expensive especially when we're buying a house and the job market is shaky. A new Ford doesn't mean a trade-in; we'll keep the 91..like the look. We've committed a sin, though. We upgraded our AC to the other standard. I can't ever remember which, is it the RU286 or is that an abortion pill for the truck? We used an cheap AutoZone aftermarket kit since the AC didn't work anyway but now it works fine.

People are amazed when we take the truck in to be smog checked. They don't understand how the engine runs so well after so much use.

Also need to replace the Ox sensor sometime this weekend. Remember, change the juice and your truck will last a VERY LONG TIME!!!!!

109k

Mine's got 109k (nothing as impressive as 300-450k.....WOW!), with original engine and tranny. Tranny shows no signs of slowing, but it hasn't been used off-road ever really. I'm going to change that pretty soon, so I'll let you know when that sucker drops. I bet it will last for a good while though, been taken care of pretty well minus the ripped up front seats (which are leather, <sigh>), and a nice key-striping job done by some wonderful person I'll never get to meet. Gotta love living in a college town. Also, I've got a couple oil leaks that are screaming (or perhaps smelling) to be fixed. Also just had to change the bushings. Interestingly enough, I had a little dead mouse riding with me under the hood for about 20k miles. He even got steam cleaned (believe me, had it been mine for those miles, he would've been gone after the miles it took just for me to drive home and get him the hell outta there). All-in-all, it's still performing pretty good, but not looking too good. It's got the beauty of an explorer, but a little rust, a little keyed action, and a little rippage of the seats. Still love it though. And about to perform the mod's on it. Keep on drivin'....
