'11 Explorer Revealed!!

When I first read about this it depressed me a little bit. The Explorer was my first vehicle and I'm still driving one. I hated how they essentially turned into a 'soccer mom van' for soccer moms who think they're too cool for vans. Just stick to your toyotas and hondas and leave us our real suvs.

Agreed. The SUV is turning in to a 4wd minivan

This is why they created the SUV in the FIRST PLACE. For the soccer mom's and the people that DIDN'T want a station wagon or the mini van at the time!

nope nope nope suvs were created for the off road capabilities. not for soccer moms look at the old suvs scouts and such

Like the.....bronco?

Ok, your right but, If I used your example, then I would have to go back to the originally Willies Jeep and AMC CJ5/7/8 and say that the newer YJ's and KJ's suck for off road capabilities. When they came out (YJ/KJ) there weren't that many aftermaker parts availible and the ones that were, were pricey. Heck even the 4th gen Explorer sucks for off road. The 1st gen Bronco was three times better then anything that came after it!

Ford went after their target market. Mostly ladies drive explorers, and hardly any of these go off-road so ford went for a mainly street SUV with some off-road capability. Not like the target market wants a SUV that comes with a lift stock, 16" wheels, large tires, rugged. They want a car/minivan with 4WD. Thats why in 02 the explorer unfortunately got a 3rd row seat :(

Your absolutely right and it has stayed that way since.

I like it. I may consider one as used ones begin to populate the market.

I have a 2004 Saturn VUE as well in my garage. It has a 2.2L 4 cylinder, FWD (open diff), 5 speed manual transmission, power windows/locks/sunroof and a unibody chassis. Is it an off-roader? Not hardcore by any means but it can handle some light stuff- and even here in the Front Range of Colorado (Denver area) with the Rocky Mountains as our city's backdrop, I'd guess that 99% of the 4x4 SUVs that litter the streets around here only go into 4x4 mode when it snows. The rest of the time they are pavement pounding and mall cruising. I wouldn't be surprised if most of that 99% never even saw a dirt road.

We have been considering a minivan to replace our VUE but this new Explorer might seriously be an option. I have no issues with buying and driving a minivan. I'm not in 7th grade anymore and not concerned by what other people may think of me because of something I have. But the new Explorer offers basically everything in terms of size that the minivan does AND has a 4wd option- that is appealing to me. Yes it's not hardcore 4wd capable, but having it available when needed is nice. I think the only 4wd minivan on the market is the Toyota and I will not buy a Toyota (I think they are boring transportation appliances driven by mindless drones who don't know how to drive- ie the "uncommanded" Prius acceleration issues).

I'll be watching how this new Explorer does.

I'd seen that video earlier, but I hardly ever trust those kinds of videos. Not to mention, if you don't go dune bashing, then that video really doesn't help at all. I'll be waiting for normal type people's videos before I give the 2011 any offroad credit.

And since when do YJs and KJs suck offroad? I don't see how YJ's suck at all, and KJ's at least have solid rears. There are all kinds of aftermarket things for those guys, and KJ's have better stock approach, breakover and departure angles than stock 06+ Explorers (granted, KJ has advantage because it's just plain smaller). I've seen KJ's do some impressive stuff, and the newer KK's are pretty competent offroad and they don't look as odd as the KJ's.

That argument could be turned around to say that if you don't go rock crawling or heavy off roading (which in the grand scheme is true of 99.x% of drivers), that the new Ex would do (and will do) anything that normal drivers will ask of it. Do you guys really think that this vehicle, when driven into 99% of the places it could go, won't be able to move? Seriously?

I mean really- this has all been discussed, and since there isn't a 2011 on the road yet, it's all speculation.

The point is, Ford is targeting the largest market possible. And no, this isn't it:

You might want to read MY post again! I said WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT!

They still had better angles and solid rear axles when they first came out. Also, IFS/IRS Explorers have been out there as long as KJ's, and there is still hardly any support.

I see your point Joe Dirt, I wasn't really meaning that I wanted to see the 2011 crawling or anything crazy like that KJ you have pictured, but I'm just looking for something that involves the 2011 somewhere where it doesn't look like the operator knows 90+% of what the terrain's going to throw at them. Besides the dunes (which, like I said, means nothing if you don't go dune bashing), the only offroad footage of the 2011 that I've seen out there are those videos of the 2011 in semi-mucky environments where the operator just has to maintain momentum (which you can see them doing), and then they safely make it to the dry part of the playpit to regain traction, turn around and have another go.
I'm basically wanting the 2011 on an actual trail.

The one thing I really don't understand is how Ford did target their audience (makes sense, they are a real company), but I just feel that didn't try to cover as any bases as the other new SUVs. For example, it seems like other companies like Jeep, Nissan and Toyota (even though I really wouldn't ever want those last two, and Jeeps do get old IMO) target their suburban audience, but still have perks and hidden things to make enthusiasts happy.
To keep with the KJ example: Jeep makes a compact, girly (IMO, again) looking SUV for people who want pretty good MPG, but still want an SUV - so that's that, right? - No, surprise, it can be lifted a good bit even without SAS, and it already has a solid rear axle, good angles and a real transfer case.
So far, with the 2011, it's: Ford makes a midsize, urban-looking SUV for people who want a good ride in the city, space for stuff/people and good MPG... and surprise, we made the transmission, brakes, etc. play along with a computer to give you "traction."

I'd have to say I'm pretty depressed that I'm comparing the Ford Explorer to a KJ, and I still don't see the Ex winning. That's pretty ridiculous. What happened do being able to compare Explorers to 4Runners and stuff like that? I agree with icecube's video comment, but that one guy has a point - You can get a diff lock on a 2011 4Runner, but you can't even get a transfer case on a 2011 Explorer! What happened to Ford Tough and all that greatness? You can even get a locking center diff on a 2011 Kia Sorento - that's that thing that pretends to be an ML! Speaking of that, 2011 kind of reminds me of the W164 MLs or those GLKs, but you can at least get lockers on those in Europe. Anyway, the 2011 4Runner gets 19mpg (V6) and the 2011 Kia gets 21mpg, those are pretty good. Granted - the Kia can only tow 3500lb, no matter, a Kia should not have any offroad toy that a Ford doesn't.

I dunno, only time will tell - but I say stuff's going south in general.

I agree with your synopsis, FLO on the perks of Jeep design. I would disagree strongly in saying that Ford is going south in general. I guess at this point, we're a little spoiled with what we have, and what we can mod easily. Times are changing, people are flocking to Ford, and they're going to be around. Stay tuned, you won't be disappointed. Ford understands that there is a market, i.e. the Raptor model. I'm not jeapordizing relationships with family beyond saying not to give up on Ford and to stay tuned. ;)

Thats the whole point of an explorer, and any ford....to make it better by modding!

Agreed. I kind of like Raptors (not so much this whole Supercrew 4dr 6.2L deally), but I feel Ford's getting polarized and modding is the most fun (IMO) on those vehicles in the gray area. But polarizing makes Ford's tasks easier and "more efficient."
I'll keep my left eye open, so if it does go south I'll still be able to stumble around in search of someone else to support - haven't sold my shares yet. I've been pretty tempted though recently (not just because gains and such, I think of owning shares as a way to show approval).

good to see the explorer name carry on to something popular, but you can count me out for now. I'll buy a 2010 model first.
