Why does everyone use the 4406 for awd swaps--is it physically smaller than the 1356 from a full size truck or is it the electronics that you need?

Yes the 1356 is a very wide transfer case. In general, Borg Warner likes to make their transfer cases wide (and chain driven.. weee)

Thanks for the reply. I was asking because I am just starting a 5.0/aode swap into a 94 Xplorer and would like to use a full size transfer. Do you know how much smaller? I have 2 1356 cases sitting here so I wanted to try and use them but if the 4406 is less wide I would spend the money on one.

the 1356 will not fit in the 95-01 explorers cuz it will hit the frame, fuel lines, and most imporant the tb bracket. tried to stuff one in. but the pre 95's you will have to trim a little off the frame rail to make it fit

The 1356 is better for the 1st gen. trucks if you have some OEM wiring in the vehicle already. BW4406 is better for later trucks if the electronic TOD version is wanted, for the same reason. Most of the wiring exists in all of the vehicles. The 4406 is easier to find with lower mileage too.

Thanks for the help. Did anyone have them side by side or have the actual measurement of the width--I am curious to know which is wider and by how much and can't seem to find the dimensions by searching.

Does anyone know the width of a 4406? I have been searching and cannot find the specs anywhere.
