I'm givin' it a try. Acetone is one of the very few solvents that burn with no residue... I use to use in a spectrometer- that's where you burn metal and graph the wavelengths to see what elements are present. I've heard its very difficult to prove acetone is an accellerant when userd to start a fire....okay, a little off topic. Adding something as pure burning to gas in a small quantity, can't be that bad for it. The gaskets, seals and injectors are built to withstand fuel, bumpers and some plastics aren't.

My $.02

Still testing the first tank. :) This is going to take a while, sit back, have a few beers, go to the store and get more beer for tomorrow and the next day, and the next day, and the day after that, etc.

I'll let you know when I finally run out of gas. Should be sometime next month :D

Okay, the ones preaching that it will destroy your seals are dead wrong. If you have ever replaced fuel lines you know that they are made to withstand chemicals and solevents. They have to. Gas will also desolve some types of plastic. If you want to be a skeptic about if it will improve milage, fine. But if you want to spout about things you know nothing about, stop.
It's almost like when I bring Sushi back to work for lunch and everyone is "Ew! that is soo gross." and I'm "Shut the hell up! This is my lunch." :shoot:

If you don't beleive me do this. Take a one gallon gas can. Everyone has one. put one once of Acetone in the can and fill the rest with gas. I know this is not the ratio you would use in the tank, but it will prove the point. Then go to any auto parts store and buy the smallest unit of the cheapest fuel line they have. put it in the can and walk away. Check it as often as you like. I bet the gas will go bad before the hose does. The first one to prove me wrong will get a take of gas from me via paypal.com. I have all of this lying around I think I will put it all together in the morning so I can be sure no one lies to me.

Well the acetone has been added and the truck filled with Amoco 87 for the long trip. The acetone was added at the rate of 2 fl oz/10 gal gas.

We shall know a little more tomorrow after 500 miles of I 75 driving.

Just unsubscribed and resubscribed per Rookie's request :D

This sounds too good to be true, but it may work! Figure the gas tank is 20 gallons, 4 oz of actone per fillup. $4.50 for 32 ounces, about .60 extra cents every fillup. Now for 3-5 more mpg, that's ~65 more per tank. That's under a penny a mile! :D

OhThankGod someone else understands this. Newer cars (most after 1992, ALL after 1996) have a fuel system designed to withstand most chemicals, including (but not limited to) acetone, toulene, methanol, alcohol, and Barbasol. Feel free to add any combination to your gas tank to see the results.

Keep in mind, that if you add 2oz for every 10 gal, that you'll have another 4oz in the tank, and that will give you a few more miles per tank!.

It probably only says "unsubscribe" if you've already posted/subscribed to it, and "subscribe" if you haven't posted/subscribed. ;)

Conspiracy Theory

Well, I admit that this thread (and that Frenchman's article I've read) has me very intriugued, although I'm still very cautious about what I will allow to go into my fuel tank besides fuel...

One question though: If this really does work with absolutely no side effects, then how come it is not common knowledge with the millions of cars and trucks on the roads today globally? After all, everyone who owns a car/truck knows mechanics or auto repair shops, and some people are mechanically inclined themselves too. I think the secret would last about a month at most - the guy who worte the article claims he'd been doing that for about 50 years or so... hmm... Unless he's the only chemist in the world, I think others would have figured it out too.

Again, I'm not saying people who believe it will work are wrong (and I hope it does work). But you have to admit, even the most powerful governments today wouldn't be able to keep a secret of this magnitude if it were true... any ideas as to why no regular Joe out there knows about this? (Wait! I think the Feds are at my door... they're armed! damn, I'm shot! ) :D

Don't try this at home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been wondering that too

I will say that I'm half way through the first tank at a ratio of 2oz/10gal running 91 octane with an Apten (Brian Herron) tune for the modifications listed in my signature. Tires 31x10.5 pressures are 31.5 front and 30.5 rear. 3.73 gearing and things are looking good.

GPS moving average speed 28mph (indicative of mostly city driving). I would normally average 14-15mpg. My guess is that I will be above that but I can't say how far yet.

My initial feeling is that Acetone WILL make a difference

I would not use more than 2 onces of acetone in a 20 gallon tank. Some people I have talked to said that adding more acetone made no difference in MPG. I myself have been using the 2 onces for 20 gallons since I bought the X new from the factory (8 years) and have had no problems with my truck.

Wow... 8 years? Well, here's the million dollar question then: What's your average MPG for city/highway on your SOHC explorer?

Test Results: 1999 SOHC - (stock except for Gibson catback exhaust). 4.88 gears, 35" tires, 60 mph cruise control.

4/07/05 wind NNE @ 15 - 20mph
roundtrip: Greenvlle SC > Newbury SC and back.
100.4 miles, 5.5 gals, 18.3mpg

Acetone added same day@ 2.5 oz / 21 gal tank:
identical results; same day, same highway, same roundtrip, same readings.
102.2 mles, 5.6 gals, 18.3 mpg

I'm unemployed but I just spent $30 for gasoline and acetone today in order be able to give this info to our members... hope it helps you all :)
