I have a 1991 Explorer 4x4. Currently swapping in a manual tranny.

Here was the problem. It would got into 4x4 high but not low. $x4 lights would not work either(the bulbs are good)

Got to messing with it today and unplugged the 2 connectors on the 4x4 and hit the test button like I seen on here to try and the red led stays solid for a minute or 2 then goes off.

Dont get any clicking of the relays or no sounds what so ever. Before I hit the test button you could hear the relay click and it would go into 4x4 high nut not low and the lights never worked.

The trans is not currently in but I have the manual trans wiring harness in and a jumper on the neutral wires is it thinks it in neutral.

Also I am not getting any power coming out of the w/lb wire going to the 4x4 switches.

Does the solid light on the 4x4 module mean its bad? I searched and didnt see any info on it staying solid.

Thanks for any help.

Guess I just found the answer to my question. Alldata says "A STEADY INDICATOR LIGHT, indicates that control module is inoperative and must be replaced."

Geuss its off to the junkyard.

Only tihng I can figure is something was always wrong with it and thats why it would got into 4x4 LOW or the lights never worked. Then it finally took a crap and none of it works now.

I get a different module and give it a try.

The 4x4 module fixed it. The lights worked on the dash and it went into 4x4 high but not low. Then I ran across some info and I had to splice 1 wire into another since im converting to a manual trans and now it goes into 4 low. Everything and great now. Thanks for the help.

i have a 92 x with a manual tranny and i cannot get itt into 4 low either when i got it the 4x4 motor did not work and i did the motor fix from this site and now i have 4x4 high and it works great but when i hit 4x4 low nothing happens what wire was the problem with yours i have checked all connections from when i replaced the motor and they are all good any ideas???? i did notice that there is a sensor or something on the top of the tranny that was cut and is not connected does that have anything to do with the 4x4 low system any help would be appreciated

Ajayy, You have to push the brake AND the clutch at the same time to engage low range.
