I know this has been covered a million times here (it's a Ford site, after all), but I'm curious if I can get a few direct responses to my situation.
I've taken over my girlfriend's 1992 Explorer EB 4x4 as my new off-roading toy. The transmission started slipping really badly about a year and a half ago so she bought a brand new car. It's been sitting ever since, for the most part. I've gone out and cranked it, driven it around the yard a bit every couple months, and even drove it about 20 miles about a month ago, but the transmission is slipping big time from a stop.
Eventually it'll clunk and engage, but it's a hit or a miss. I don't rev it to try to force it because I'd hate for it to engage at 3k and explode a planetary through the floorboard and into my leg (exaggeration, but you get the point.)
I've been eyeing the Transgo shift kits to see if that'll help, but does this problem sound to any of you more experienced guys like the transmission is just fried? I'd hate to throw money at this without some real testing so I'm not about to jump at a complete rebuild (or simple replacement) just yet. Most of the slipping I read about here is between gears or losing 4th gear, etc. I couldn't find much on slipping from a stop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
In addition... if the transmission turns out to be fried, I'd much rather convert it to a manual transmission. I know the basics of needing the transmission and t-case, but will the driveshafts swap over or do I need them from the manual truck as well? What about the crossmember? Will there be any real wiring issues between the two? Is the A4LD computer-controlled? Would I need to change out the ECM?
A little background on myself: I know my way around Fords, I've been tinkering with them for 16 years, now. My most recent major project was a 1989 Crown Victoria station wagon with a GT-40P 302HO and T5. I went through four AODs in that car before I gave up and built a pedal assembly with a clutch pedal for it. Two days after I got it dialed in right I exploded the 8.8 and parted it out in the heat of the frustration.
My current DD is a 1994 Ranger 3.0/5spd with 2" lift and 245/75-R16 Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs. The motor is currently out for the heavy maintenance (timing, water pump, oil pan gasket, etc.) and once that's back in (hopefully this weekend) I'll get started on this Explorer.
Thanks for any and all help you guys can/will hopefully provide; I'm looking forward to getting this thing going and seeing how well it'll hang with the girly Jeeps in the mud.
