1992 Explorer Transmission problems going into GEAR sometimes "Help Anyone?"

Alright well this is my 3ed post on here. Anyways I have a 1992 explorer 4x4 which recently blew a transmission line. I fixed the line with another rubber hose then put more fluid into the transmission to get it home. Then it was having problem going into gear. It will go into reverse just fine and then sometimes it would go into 1st kinda slow and then sometimes it doesn't want to go in at all. I recently put a 91 4.0 in it due to the old one blowing a piston. So yesterday I Drove it and work's just fine. When it decides to go into gear It shifts perfect. So earlier 2 day I drove it a little bit then decided to fix the lines right so I wouldn't have any more problems with it and put steel lines in. Now after I put the steel lines in and took it for a ride worked good was a little slow going into 1st and then after backing out of my driveway to turn around it didn't want to go into 1st gear again.

Its a rebuild transmission. I checked the fluid levels and they are just fine. There are no leaks. I am not sure if the lines are air bound or something so am not really sure what may be the problem. My dad thinks it might be a valve body in the transmission. Any tips or ideas would be Great!!!! Thanks Ryan

It could be a valve body problem, valve body gaskets, boost valve, modulator, bands, etc. When was the last time you replaced the filter?

Well I haven't changed it since I owned the truck because it was a rebuilt Trany. So I just added fluid 2 it when I change the motor in the truck. But due to it looseing fluid I would say It was 2-3 days ago when I had gotten a blown line because I lost like 4-5 quarts. But I never changed the filter in it. Do u think it could be a vac line that goes to it?


Have any suggestions on what to maybe try doing?

Well yesterday I adjusted the bands on the transmission. Then tried seeing if it worked still no forward gears. So then today I dropped the pan down no metal or anything in the pan so I don't know what could be wrong with the transmission but I think its might be one of those stupid little fixes. So I think I may try putting the new filter up in there and try giving it a shot.


It works in reverse and when it wants to for forward but right now it hasn't been going in at all in forward not even slow.


Anyone have any suggestions on what I should try doing next?

The only problem I have had with my Ranger (same tranny) caused some shifting problems as well as late engagement, I found the vlave body gasket torn in one spot, fixed that and it worked right again. Couldn't see it until I took the VB off. You could have a similar problem, but the intermittent occurrence seems kinda odd.

I have a 91, and I was having the same thing. I bought it a month ago and the day after I bought it I backed out of the drive way on a very cold morning, and it would not go into gear, I shut it off and started it again and then it went in and drove fine. Since then I have had a few times especily in the cold mornings that when I back out of the drive way it takes a second or so before it engages to go forward, but then drives just fine all the way to work. Yesterday however, I stoped at the bank on my way home, and I could not get it to go forward from there on out, drives backwards great. I had to have it towed, I am trying to figure this out today myself.

I just talked to a couple of transmission shops, both of them said something had to break inside, and I need a rebuild from between $1300 to $1800. I have a hard time believing this, I still think it has to be a stuck valve or solonid or something, there was no noise when it failed this time.

Transmission shops always want to rebuild everything. Start with the valve body. Check the sticky thread in the transmission section called the A4LD valve body rebuild diary. It's written by Glacier991.

Well today after letting it sit to drain the fluid out I doped down the low/reverse servo. Then I pulled it out and there was no spring so who ever rebuilt it messed up putting it back together. So I took my extra transmission thats blown also and took the spring out of that and put it back up after cleaning it. Then made sure the VB bolts were all not lose which they wasn't. Next I put the filter back on and put the pan up and filled it back up with ATF. Then I figured I would try some of the Trany sea foam stuff for a try. So right at the moment am letting my truck run and see if it clean it or something. As of right now still no luck with forward gears so next thing am gonna try if it doesn't wanna work is drop the VB on it.

Anyone have any other suggestions or something I should do before the VB would be great am willing to try anything at this point.

Transmission problems

Hey guys. Was going out of my neighborhood, hit the gas and heard AND felt a huge *BANG* then it wouldn't go anymore. Just a whine. It goes in reverse, but does not go forward. Do you guys know if it is just the torque converter or the whole tranny?

It's possible that a one way sprag broke.

You will have to tear the transmission apart to get to this part so you might as well rebuild everything at the same time.

I would if i had the money to. Ive been trying to sell the truck but sadly not many people are interested in a first generation Explorer. Im gonna get the elite on this thing and advertise it on here. Hopefully someone will be willing to take it off my hands.
