I know it's in here somewhere. 1992 v6 xlt 4.0 2wd - losing trans fluid, the only way I know it leaking is because the transmission won't pull me up a hill and the fluid is all over my tailgate and rear window. I know it's in here somewhere. Most Gracious

Front pump seal?

Thanks for the reply Masterd; I'll check that out.

this front pump seal - is it where the tranny meets the engine? that's where I'm losing the fluid. drip.....drip.....drip. could it also be that I have added too much fluid?

this is probably going to take a transmission expert, huh?

Thanks again

guess I should also add that I put Mercon V in there too (read a post that said it was good to use, but just read an old post from BrooklynBay that said don't use Mercon V on older than 1997)

what's the best way to remove this fluid and add Type F (I used in the past)?

you can tell, I'm still wet behind the ears

Mercon V shouldn't cause that. It definitely does sound like a front pump seal.

The only way to fix this is to drop the transmission and replace the seal. The actual replacing of the seal is easy, it's dropping the transmission that is the hard part.

The correct fluid for the A4LD is Mercon...not Mercon V...

Thanks again. Sounds like big bucks to me.

get this - leaked all the fluid, now when I add fluid it comes out as soon as I pour it in - time to take it to the shop, huh?

Sounds for sure like a front pump seal now.

yep - engine was running - it's like the fluid went from the filler tube straight to the pavement - Masterd, I'm just not ready to accept that it's the front seal yet (but I'm on the way) - now the transmission won't engage (had to park it in a schoolyard) - i'll have it towed and let the local ford specialist check it out - don't want to have to pay for it to be towed twice

thanks all - i'll keep ya posted

Find out WHERE it is leaking at first. This could be an easy fix that a shop could charge a lot to fix. I dont think a leaking pump seal would leak it out as fast as you put it in unless there was no seal there at all.

dipstick tube came out? dunno if theres enough pressure there, but if the new stuff is immediately coming out, that could be it.

:salute: Transmission rebuilt and runs like a top - new plugs, wires, MAF, and ECT - runs really good now but still bugged by the "oil pressure gauge" bouncing.

Thanks Y'all
