at least on the 2nd gens you cant remove the pillar. you can mask the surrounding areas and paint however

If you're talking about the exterior moldings they're a decal.

Welcome. There is no trim between the front and rear doors of the 91-01's, that black section is not the pillar, it's the rear door itself. That is the front outer surface of the rear door, and it fades easily over time. It was a satin black finish, most people repaint it with a cheap spray paint. I have repainted those of my old 91 XLT Explorer. I would suggest a better paint, and make it a gloss finish too. Some people paint it the body color, which looks good also.

There is no trim
The window guides count , yes? To refresh these in a long lasting manner those should be removed:

Fortunately for Prestonn349 , there is good cheat for this, look for "black pillar tape" or "pillar cover".

All of the various window trim pieces have rubber components integrated into them. I wouldn't try to repaint the aluminum portions, the rubber is farther gone than the paint. I have all of that new in boxes stored away, I collected it about 16 years ago when I was reconstructing my 99. I saw how rough the parts were on just seven year old parts on my 99, and bought as many of the new pieces as were available, for my 98 project truck. The long trim piece along the top edge of the doors(runs along the "A" pillar back to the "C" pillar), were the hardest to get, they were being obsoleted before the 10 year mark.
