The 4x6's would work if you used german explorer headlight bezels. Might be able to find them on german ebay.

I know this is years ago.. but i did that on my 92

Also, if you're wanting more of a "second-gen" look, you could always swap the whole front end from a secon-gen donor vehicle onto your first-gen. Iirc, it all just bolts right up!
