The 1994 Explorer has a 3-4 shift that is electronically controlled. If an earlier model A4LD is installed, I assume that overdrive would be rendered useless. Is that correct? Would the earlier-year transmission still function normally except that overdrive would be missing? Thanks for any comments. David B.

All A4LD's should be the same. Later years used some stronger parts I think but they're all computer controlled 3-4 and torque converter lockup.

You need to go all the way back to '87 or '88 to get the vacuum controlled 3-4 shift in the A4LD. About '88, the electronic controlled 3-4 shift became the norm for A4LD's, so you should not have anything to worry about (as far as this detail goes) as long as you are searching post '88 A4LD's

Can personally attest that a '92 trans will work without issue in a '94. You'd really want a later model A4LD if possible though, with all the updates.
