1995 explorer limited help

So I have a 1995 explorer limited 4x4 I was driving on the freeway and with no warning all of a sudden I was pressing on the gas and it felt like it was in neutral and it has not moved since. Won't move in 4 wheel reverse nothing. I start it up and put it in drive, nothing but when I shift back to park it sounds like metal in a garbage disposal. I know nothing about cars but I'm thinking transmission. Can this be fixed or does it need replacement also I found a 2000 explorer is that transmion comparable? Any help would be awesome

Your 95 has a 4R55E transmission (with a 4X4) if it's a v6. Only trannies that are compatible with yours is the 95 4X4, and the 96 4X4. Definitely sounds like tranny needs a rebuild. Check the ATF level, does it smell burnt? Look dark?

Try 4x4 Low see if it moves.

I know it's been a while since you posted this so I don't know if you fixed your Ex, but I just purchased a 96 XLT that has the same issue. This one wouldn't shift into 4low (or auto, none of the dash lights would illuminate when the switch is turned) and you could hear a slight grinding when in gear so I suspected it to be stuck. I got it home and was able to manually shift the t-case into low and the rear shaft would lock in, but move it into high and it would engage one out of three or four tries.

Anyways, I removed the t-case and tore it down. Inside I found that one half of one side of the shift fork was broken so when it tried to engage high, it wasn't pushing on the shift collar evenly and it wouldn't fully engage high range.

I haven't fixed it yet as I need to clean and inspect it to see if I need any other parts, but I suspect that replacing the shift fork will fix it.

Not looking forward to cleaning it as someone filled it with grease instead of ATF. Everything looks to be fine and nothing is noticeably damaged from the grease, but I need to check the pump (probably junk).
