Well, I decided screw putting a cam into my current motor. I'm just going to rebuild my last motor (that ran perfect when I pulled it) and add the cam in there with some other upgrades. It would be just as easy to pull the whole motor [if not easier] than to try and pull the cam with the motor still in the truck.

So here is the plan. Spend the summer tearing this one down, getting it hot-tanked and machined. Basically I want to maybe throw it in just before school starts. Or even after school starts since I am only a few blocks from campus.

Anyway, why don't y'all experienced folk give me some tips and suggestions for this project. *cough* James t *cough* Alec *ahem* Drew *sneeze* Shaun. :D

I want to keep those cost down and the Output high! :D

I hope not! I have a lot to do. I've torn it down to the block already. Now I just gotta get the freeze plugs out and get it over to the hot tank tonight!

My Dad says he doesn't know if I should hot tank this thing because of the cam bearings. Would these things be okay in the tank? ANyone know about these things??

Well here it is gutted.

347 Stroker:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Dude.. I was thinking that. But 1) Don't they have that oiling problem? I want this to be nice and reliable. and 2) It seems like its tough to get the stock computer to run right with a 347.

But I was thinking 331. Maybe if James would bring his keg closer to his computer so he wouldn't have to go to the kitchen so much.. he could stay on long enough to read this and help me out.

What do you know about strokers, Terd?

Yep, Stroke it :D Anyways, ive read good things about the TrickFlow Aluminum Heads for the 5.0...Very cool project, I will be watching this thread, as one of these days I want to build a 400 + HP monster for the '97 :)

Oh, and check out summit for kits to stroke it, they have kits that include all the pistons, crank, etc. And as I recall they wernt terribly outragously priced!

main issue #1- what is your budget?

me personally, id stroke it. a stroker rotating assembly isnt much more $$$ than a good 302-308 one. but then, your stock heads will be crap. so, you'll have to get new heads. give us a dollar figure to work with. :)

Well I'm just going to be building this over the summer. So.. the more it's gonna cost the longer it'll take. Ya know? I don't have heads for this one.. I sold em :( .. which I guess was a good thing to do? So I'm open for any suggestions.

I'm pretty set on a 331 unless you guys can talk me out of it ...and into a 347. The 347 kit from summit is ONLY $1480

What do you guys think? Oh yeah.. where can I get a camshaft bearing remover tool??

The 347 and 331 stroker motors are both as bullet proof and reliable as a stock 5.0 engine when built correctly to exact tolerances and specs!.

All the stories people hear of the them leaking or consuming a lot of oil, especially the 347, is largely because of the quality of machining work done and mainly assembly. Almost all the time, the ones that weren't assembled by an engine builder or someone who specializes in small block Fords for example, are the ones who end up leaking or consuming a lot of oil. They start leaking through seals, rings, cam plug, oil will start collecting in the back of the runners, or something as stupid as an upsidedown ring causing oil to be sucked into the upper area.

As long as you put the engine together carfully you should be fine, if it were me I'd rather have a builder do it, but something about you tells me that you could pull it off LOL:p:D

Hey EXP.. you think I'll be able to have a smooth runnin motor with a 347 stroker, e cam, and some nice heads (as far as computer)? Didn't XBox have a hard time getting his running right? Or was that mostly cause of his charger??

As far as heads they can get real expensive. When I rebuilt my 289 for my stang a buddy of mine cut down some chevy 2.02 intake valves for them. Also 1.60 exhaust. Ported and polished. I had left the heads with him for just a valve job. Imagine my suprise when he showed up at my house with them. :D :D

Did you try Autozone? I know they rent a lot of weird tools...

I called Kragen and they said they don't have them. I'll call the other guys tomorrow. Napa sells them for a mere $240.
