I'm having a problem with my 1997 Explorer XLT 5.0 AWD. I have a clicking sound and a slight bump upon acceleration. It seems to be coming from the front of the truck. From the drivers seat it sounds like it's coming from the drivers side. I'm not sure if it is the CV axle or the transfer case. I hope somebody can help. Can the transfer case be rebuilt? How hard is it to replace with a used one? Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi
First, you could remove the front drive shaft, and drive it for a bit--see if the noise goes away--
if it does not, it may be the front cv axle shaft is worn.

If the noise does go away with front shaft removed-it is "probably" the front drive shaft which is bad,

don't leave the front shaft out though-because it needs it to hold "park.
The truck will roll in park without it--

A clicking is more often than not a CV.

I had the same problem with mine. I suggested to my mechanic that we take out the front drive shaft and the noise went away! Haven't fixed the problem just left the shaft out and use the emergency brake when parked. Now it makes a whining sound (been about 3 yrs since shaft was taken out) Good luck
