Hi guys. I am a noob here. I have been a big fan of the Bronco II and really wanted another one. I looked at one this morning and decided that it was junk... So... I went on Craigs and found a '97 Explorer Sport 5 speed... Pretty much the same size and idea as a B2.

I am driving 3 hours tomorrow to look at and maybe buy it. What are things I should look for on this vehicle? What are the pros/cons? I understand that there is some kind of an automatic 4 wheel drive system. I will probably want to swap that out for a manual case at some point. I don't like the computer telling me when it is time for 4 wheel drive! (Although it probably knows better than I do). Do the traction control models still have a way to manually put them into 4 low? I know the Escape doesn't offer 4 low at all...

If I wind up buying it and dragging it home, I am sure I will have many more questions to get going. Thanks in advance for any pointers to get me in the right direction!

Tom

IF you buy it, then you will be TOWING it back? If it does not run, your questions will revert to much more basic ones first..... imp

Assuming the Explorer you are looking at had 4WD, it will be the updated version of Control Trac that is really pretty good. There is no front axle disconnect, so the default "Auto" selection will shift power to the front in 10% increments as it detects rear wheel slippage. But, better yet, you can select 4WD Hi or Lo where the transfer case will lock as with a manual transfer case, giving much surer footing in off-road or snow conditions. Yes, there will be a low-range with that as well. Prior to '97 the only transfer case lock was in the low range, so this is a nice feature.

Look for the obvious for a used car. IS antifreeze level correct and right color? Oil same question. Is there any OBVIOUS leaks? IE (head gasket, water pump, radiator, valve covers.)

Does the truck start and run smooth, no chugging, sputtering, or any other awful stuff. Does the clutch feel tight? Does the trans engage all the gears properly w/o grinding?

And last but not least do the brakes work? I left the brake comment for last because brakes are easier and cheaper than the above stuff.

The top secret to a long living 4.0 v6 is make sure it never over heats, this was told to me by a mechanic of 30 + years.

I guess the biggest thing is is the vehicle such a POS that you can't fix it? If it is RUN! Most everybody has some mechanic skills (some more than others), so if it's something you can't tackle either by yourself or w/ a couple buddies, then you probably don't want it.

IF you buy it, then you will be TOWING it back?

LOL that's just how NC people talk.... some of my good buddies are from there. I was stationed there in NC for 3 years, so sometimes words don't sound appropriate.

As for the 5-speed gearbox, the only issues I've ever heard of with them is they have a tendincy to leak a little oil, so make sure you check it on a regular basis or it will lock up in 4th gear (your 1:1 gear) I've gotten a few parts trucks for dirt cheap that way.

Yes... I drove another vehicle 3 hours to go look at it. I couldn't drive them BOTH back! LOL! So "Dragging" was quite literally what I was going to do.

Anyway. I talked to the lady who was selling it on the phone at length about the thing. She was singing it's praises, telling me what a great truck it was and how they just took it to a mechanic to be checked over and how he gave it a clean bill of health. They were selling it ONLY because their daughter was about to start driving and she couldn't drive a stick.

Convinced that this was what I wanted, I rented a dolly from the local U-haul and set out for Myrtle Beach with cash in hand.

This thing was absolute JUNK! There wasn't one single system on the vehicle that worked like it was supposed to. you let go of the steering wheel and it wanted to make a right turn into the ditch. The engine howled, the wheel bearings growled and the thing didn't have the power to pull it's own shadow down the road. the buttons were broken off of the steering wheel, the shifter had no spring back to center... It just laid over to the side. The shift knob was even missing... Not that a shift knob is a deal breaker, but it seemed to flow with the decor of the rest of the truck... It was RAGGED! I am CONVINCED that this thing spent most of it's 190,000 mile life in Hazzard County with the gas to the floor, jumping over railroad tracks.

It was so bad that instead of driving it a few miles, I turned around in less than 1/2 mile and went back for fear that it would leave me stranded.

The check engine light was on (Which means I can't register it in NC until I get it fixed), the dash was scraped up from one end to the other, the headliner was thrashed from where there had been bikes hauled in it. It was a TOTAL mess... AND, to top it all off, it looked like someone painted it with Rustoleum and a Wagner power painter.

The worst part of it all is that the company this lady works for is also one of my clients. We know a LOT of the same people. Every one of which told me how "uppety" she is, and how she would NEVER let her kids drive junk. One of the other company managers who I am friends with wanted to ride over with me to check it out. They live in an upscale gated community and have a driveway filled with high end exotics... and then this thing.

Needless to say... I came back empty-handed... $150.00 in tow dolly rentals and fuel... and it isn't as if I am too nit-picky. I like things to be a LITTLE rough, but even the crusher would say "No thanks" to this one!

In the end... It is amazing to me that people who sell cars on Craigslist will out and out lie to you about their car. "Maybe he won't notice that it is a total piece of crap..." I understand that there may be problems that the owner doesn't know about - but THIS... This goes beyond "Oh, Really? I didn't know." For someone to let me drive 3+ hours to come and look at a car that they knew I wasn't going to buy... Baffling!

While I REALLY wanted to rip their little heads off, but being the professional that I am, I cordially thanked them for showing it to me and started to walk away. "What?! You aren't even going to make an OFFER?!" she shouted out across the yard as if I had just dumped her on Prom Night... I turned around and said "As I told you on the phone, I am not looking for a 'project', Rather, I am looking for something that my teenage daughter can drive. This thing is completely unsafe and probably not even roadworthy. I wouldn't transport my kids in it, much less let one of them drive it." to which she replied "I can't believe you came all this way to look at it and you aren't even going to make me a reasonable offer!" Again, and as nicely as I knew how to be... I said "Ok. I can go $100.00 for it. Then, I would take it straight to the scrap yard and sell it for the weight of the metal on my way out of town so that I would break even on this trip."

As I walked away, she stood on her lawn shouting "Well!!! That's just FINE!!! We have had LOTS of other calls for this!!! You can leave, THINKING that you are the only one who wanted it, but you're NOT!!! We got a call from another guy this morning begging us to hold it for him!!! Your loss!!!"... Meanwhile, neighbors were starting to appear in front of their homes looking on... NICE! I bet she is trying to get rid of it because the home owner's association is leaning on her over it.

... Craigslist.

Wow!!!! Sorry you wasted your time.

I would've offered a $1 for just cause they wasted your time/ gas/ uhaul expense.

I guarantee you were the only caller that showed up.

And yes it is amazing how people sugar-coat sh** to make a sale. I know I have been guilty of omitting a few details but not to the extreme as you posted. I mean I've omitted maybe a leak or two that's about it. I try not to have stuff that isn't road worthy.

The other thing is if SC did state inspections like NC that truck wouldn't have gotten so ragged out.

Every one of which told me how "uppety" she is, and how she would NEVER let her kids drive junk.

Hm... reminds me of a sorority girl joke, but I'd get instantly banned forever if posted...

Having said that, I'm in raleigh with a 97 RWD 5-speed and 130k miles if you ever need something to compare...

I guarantee you were the only caller that showed up.

Others might show up, but I can PROMISE that nobody is going to buy it! LOL!!!

I have a truck I am currently selling on CL. I offer those who call me about it a link to the carfax and tell them everything I know. I make sure to disclose every little scratch.

The LAST thing I want to do is make someone come here and look at something I know they aren't going to buy. It is a waste of their time and mine.

By the same token, I LOVE the people who come out and nit pick your vehicle. They want something brand new for cheap. "Wow! 189,000 miles... That's a lot of miles." Yep. That's why I thought it was important to put that in the ad so you would know that before you were sitting here in the truck with me.

"No power windows or locks?!" Nope. That's why they aren't mentioned in the ad!

"You said that you had the transmission replaced 3 years ago... Is there any warranty on that?" Uh... REALLY?

"Gee... I really wanted power windows and locks, and too bad it isn't 4 wheel drive... I REALLY wanted something with 4 wheel drive..." Then why are you here? The ad CLEARLY indicates that it is 2 wheel drive.

"What's the lowest price you will take for it?" the ad says $5800.00 FIRM. So then $5800.00 is the lowest I will take for it. I was up front about everything else, why would I lie about the price?

I ESPECIALLY like the people who will wave cash at you and ask "How much will you take... CASH MONEY TODAY?" Well... considering that I am not offering any kind of financing, and the ad says "Cash Only", I will take $5800.00 CASH MONEY TODAY!

"Well... I really like it. It runs good and it is awesome shape, but I really want power locks, windows, leather and 4 wheel drive... and I REALLY wanted something with lower miles on it..." If this truck had all of that, then I would be selling it for DOUBLE the price I AM selling it for...

I am starting to see that Craigslist has turned into a bunch of buyers who want something brand new for nothing, and sellers want to sell their junk for new prices.

Yes those individuals are just fan-tab-u-lous!!! haha

I have been in your shoes describing everything to a "T" and get the same moronic questions like they don't know how to read!!!

I had a t-bird for sale one time on CL w/ a known blown head gasket and mentioned that it shouldn't be driven daily.... I must've had 10 calls asking was it road worthy and pass a NC inspection... my first thought was didn't you read?

My second thought was wanting to flip out on the idiots. I had the car listed for $450 firm, and people were still wanting a reliable daily driver for that kinda money. In my mind I'm thinking if it was a daily driver it wouldn't be listed for $450, more like a grand.

This was also in addition to people asking how much it'd cost to fix the engine. I told them around 500-1500 depending on what you did with the motor, (this was an 84 bird w/ 302).

My favorite question of all is... "is it good on gas" well it's a v8 you tell me.

Haahaahaa! Yes! I get those. I had an 86 Full Size Bronco online for $500.00. It had body rust and some rust on the frame, but it was drivable. the A/C worked fine and it had brand new Pirelli tires on it. The truck only had 46,000 miles on it. It was from up north and had rusted a bit. I had some guy offer me $50.00 for it. When I told him "no", he started threatening me, telling me that he was going to sue me for trying to sell a motor vehicle for more than "Fair Market Value" and that he would see me in court.

If that were the case, I could sue just about everyone selling a car on CL! ROFLMAO!

I think my all time favorite ads on CL were the ones trying to sell a car w/o a title for 600-1000.... I know they're still out there.

These folks even mention that it's a complete pile of crap and have no ambition to get a title. I laughed every time I read one of these. They acted as if they didn't care they were trying to rip someone off.

I grew up in Okla, and we kinda have a saying... if it has a title, and runs well, it's worth $500. Now this obviously doesn't mean you won't have to fix something like brakes or possibly a tire. These are beaters that "could get you from A to B, with a minor investment" nothing fancy.

I wish the rest of the world saw that view point and would stop trying to take advantage of others. We're all broke to some degree, and we all need to make some money, but it shouldn't come at a cost of endangering someone's life.

I like the ones who say "no title, but you can get one from the DMV" ummm... No you can't! The ones that say "transmission is bad, but you can get one from the junk yard for $30.00. Ummm... No you can't! Or something is broken but it is a 5 dollar 10 minute fix... Then why don't YOU fix it ans raise your price of it is so cheap and easy? Other favorites include "Highway miles", and the all time best- "My mechanic says the engine in this car will last for 350,000 miles EASY!"

I can't stand people who out and out LIE in their ads!

Yeah the title ones make me laugh as if the buyer can do anything about a title not in their name!!

highway miles-- yeah the only person that would this is the ORIGINAL owner not the 15th owner.

A $30 transmission huh, boy I would like to know that persons "hook up". The cheapest transmission I've ever gotten my hands on is $100 from a junk yard, and that was after some haggling.

Now I will say the absolute cheapest transmission you can get would be from a pull-a-part, but you still have to pull the trans yourself.

Then back to the $5 dollar fix for 10 min worth of work.... I've only ever had one part that was like that. That was the coolant sensor for the temp gauge on my explorer. The part was $7 and took no more than 5 minutes to replace.

As far as people lying these days, that must be the new truth.

To make matters worse, People call me about the truck I am selling assuming that I am lying too.

Makes it impossible!
