I have read in several different places that my 97 xlt awd has the 5r55e tranny, is this true?? I cannot get up under my truck as I dont have access to a jack here and I want to be sure that I get the correct filter and gasket to do a series of fluid changes. I just want to cover all my bases before I drop the pan and get into an ol crud situation and not have the correct parts to go back.....thanks in advance.

If the truck is AWD, then it is a 5.0, meaning it has a 4R70w. If you have a 4wd 4.0, it is a 5r55e

I haven't bought lately, but www.bulkpart.com has these filters for $11.95 compared to about $30 at the auto parts stores. They sell American made SPX which is the OEM filter, not the Taiwan filters that many parts stores sell. You have to order the gaskets separately 56300E $.92 for cork. I bought several and a ATSG manual for the transmission. This filter is used for the A4LD through 5R55E and the 4WD takes long pickup tube #56010G. You might have to transfer old O rings too, can't remember. If you buy a couple for the future or share an order with friends this is a great price and easily pays for shipping. A great source of parts for the hobby transmission rebuilder. The 5R55E has a history of having a couple of loose valve body bolts that eventually cause the gasket to blow out. These tighten to about 8 foot pounds, a light hand twist.

Couple of things, traction lock refers to the type of rearend you have ( IE: limited slip). When torqueing the VB, use the proper sequence as stated in the shop manual. Use a good quality inch lb torque wrench. The main reason the VB gasket fails is because of over pressure problems and that is why they went to the bonded gasket seperator plate system and ford modification kit, both of which I recommend you purchase. When replacing the trans filter use the microfiber version and be sure to use mercon V fluid only.
