I took the EX for a few laps inside my neighborhood today. First time I drove it ever. Engine is smooth, has good power. Trans shifts up and down all 4 gears in a decent fashion. Needs a wheel alignment and tires badly.

Even if I get stuck replacing the alternator, after everything I've done. That is childs play...

The OEM alternator is great, that's a 5G model and it usually lasts 150k miles or more. They are the same as the SOHC 4.0 takes on these trucks, and they can be rebuilt for a typical cost for OEM units. Avoid some aftermarket versions, high amp units often produce less current at idle and end up with a voltage issue. Those you have to run a smaller pulley, to bring the idle speed up to make enough current.

I think it's the camera angle. I just went out there with the voltmeter and it's putting out 13.89V at idle.
my 4.0 sohc puts 14.3 at idle id check it around 15 2500rpm and see what it gets

A well charged battery can have under 14 volts at idle under many conditions. When the battery is not fully charged, or many accessories are on, the idle voltage should get closer to 14.3-14.5 volts. I'd say drive it for a good while and double check the voltage a couple different times. If the voltage stays under 14 volts after good charging, and with minor items on, then it might be worth testing the unit. Those get tired with old age, but the main stator, if it doesn't wear out, the rest is replaced in a rebuild.

Yep id hate for him to have some weird gremlins only to be caused by a weak alternator

These trucks all have a bunch of electrical circuits in them, especially the high option models. The age is what creates most gremlins, I have been dealing with all kinds of issues for 15+ years, with my past five Mark VII's(1985-92 models). The 2nd gen Explorers have similar wiring, and now 20+ years old. So the electronics of the EATC, radio, compass, trip computer, and other fragile wiring items(the wires themselves(doors)), they need you to be watchful for odd symptoms. This is the life of owning a 20+ year old vehicle.

We need to find nice qualified people who can repair the electronics, and keep them busy working on things like the EATC etc. I still have one person who does the Mark VII stuff, but he plans to really retire later this year. So I need to get him all of my used items for him to repair. The Explorers will need this kind of care very soon.

Yep the weirdest thing you will notice is the seats stop working under low voltage conditions

Hi everyone. It’s been awhile since I’ve been on here. Sold my 2000 explorer in 2014. But October 1st I picked up a 98 with a 5.0. 2wd, and a 3.73 T-loc rear for $500. The poor truck was a real mess. I live in Las Vegas so luckily there was no rust. Worst that happens here is the paint gets burned off. But the last owner or two showed the EX no love at all. I’m building this truck up for my oldest daughter who just had a baby and needs something bigger that her 98 Lincoln Mark 8.
First thing it needed was to replace the PATS module and new keys.
I replaced the fuel pump and filter, I removed all of the interior. I threw out the carpet it was so nasty. Pulled better carpet from the junk yard and scrubbed and pressure washed that. I pulled some decent cloth seat covers from the yard as well. The original leather is ruined. Everything inside was really really dirty. I recovered the headliner. A good buddy of mine loves to clean stuff and he went about sanitizing all the interior plastics. He’s done a fantastic job. The plastics look about as new as they can for their age.
Once I got it running it ran rough, and wouldn’t idle unless the MAF was unplugged. Did some digging and found that the fuse for the oxygen sensors was blown. Replaced that and she idled pretty nice. But had a touch of a misfire you could hear from the exhaust pipe. At this point it’s worth noting that there were clearly a boat load of vacuum leaks on and around the plenum. So we decided to pull the plenum and freshen up as much as we can. All the hoses under the plenum were a hodgepodge of whatever someone could find. So all that has to go. Replaced the pcv with a motor craft unit. Also put a new pcv grommet in. The original one was hard as a rock. The spark plugs were just horrible. Plug wires original 1998. The AC system had no r134 in it, so living in Vegas it’s getting complete replacement. The next step was to remove the AC box from the engine compartment. I installed a new evaporator for good measure. While that’s out I’m doing the valve seals and the valve cover gaskets. Some of the valve cover bolts were already loose. Removed them with my fingers. Luckily there is no sludge on the heads or rockers. Not bad for 253,000 miles. I put a bore scope in the cylinders and there is still cross hatch on the cylinder walls. So once the valve seal job is done and the tune up complete I believe this will run very nicely. I have a new set of fuel injectors going in as well.
For the small things and the details. I replaced the third brake light. Did all the lift support shocks, rear glass hinges. New speakers. New grill and front Ford emblem. New fog light assemblies. Found nicer bumper trim at the junk yard. Picked up some 15x7 1989 Ranger wheels. They need a good cleaning, but I think they’ll be nice. I’m sure I’m forgetting something.
Things I haven’t gotten to yet are the upper control arms, lower ball joints, new shocks, rear wheel bearings and diff service. And whatever else I come across.

Just found this thread. Respect man! Great work. Your daughter’s lucky 👍

LOL, the seats work well with a 19.2v battery hooked up to them. I bought a pair of seats a few years ago from an Explorer and for my Lincoln. I used an old pigtail to make a tool to plug into the seats, which let me move them forward to remove the back two bolts.

Surprised that they didn't burn up lol

I'll keep an eye on the alternator for now. Main thing currently is to get tires on it and an alignment.
Maybe a burnout for the old tires??? lol:p

I’m still on the warpath. Today i fitted and installed the new grill. It looks nice, the Taiwanese parts leave a bit to be desired. Had to do a fair amount of filing to get them to fit right. Yeaterday I wet sanded the headlights and clear coated them. They turned out pretty nice. Im going to install new bulbs before i put the turn signal housings back in. The day before in replaced the grey plastics on the bumper with better used pieces. Brand new fog light assemblies with new bulbs. Getting closer to the end.View attachment 425224 View attachment 425225 View attachment 425226 View attachment 425227 View attachment 425228 View attachment 425229 View attachment 425230 View attachment 425231 View attachment 425232 View attachment 425233 View attachment 425234 View attachment 425235 View attachment 425236 View attachment 425237 View attachment 425238 View attachment 425239 View attachment 425240 View attachment 425241
I stopped getting alerts for your thread, but is fun catching up. You got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!- and more EX
BTW, more cultural reference, wasn't the coffee table on the right in first pic from Austin Powers Movie?

Funny, i have no idea if the table is from Austin Powers. Haven’t watched that in a bit.
