first, how do I know if this truck has a timing belt? or chain? when should I replace it?

Next: the air conditioner intermittently works...it also idles very high when changing gears or comes to a stop in idle gear. while idling high is when the a/c doesn't work. it seems as if a plunger of some kind isn't functioning correctly that has to do with the a/c and idle system. any idea of whats going on here and what it might cost to fix it? Thanks

Motor details? Your truck most likely has a timing chain.

Theres a pressure sensor on the pressure line I believe, about 45 bucks at Ford, replace that and see whats up.....

Check the TPS(Throttle Posistion Sensor)

Also: the AC compressor is designed to cut off when the engine is being "used" (pushed hard). Theres a sensor for that too, might be driven by RPM vs Speed, and revving at low speeds (possibly caused by a bad TPS)may be tripping it. Be sure you have a full charge of freon and no leaks in the system.

Hope this helps you out

Daniel

Welcome to this forum! You have a 4.0L OHV engine. Many different parts control the idle such as the idle air control (air bypass valve), TPS, MAF, etc. Do you have any check engine lights? As for the A/C. Connect a manifold gauge set to it. Check the pressure while the A/C is on, and compare it to when it's off.
