I got check engine ligh ON so I went to AutoZone to check it. I was told that the code is related to EGR valve. If that is not enough, the vehicle have 2 different egr valve sensors. How would I diagnose the failure components?. Is the EGR valve it self or one of the sensors. I do not want to buy the store to find out which one. Any help suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Do you remember the code? That would help a lot to help diagnose. Also, what engine do you have? And do you hear anything when you're driving, like a ticking noise? The more information you give, the easier it is for other people to help.

I do not remember the code - sorry. The engine is 5.0. I took the vacuum hose of the EGR vavle(while engine running). Attach small vacuum hose and suck on it few times( do not have a vacuum pump). The engine sputter and wanted to shut down. That would indicate proper function of EGR valve?. I took the battery terminal off for few min. and latter took for a test drive. Run up high up to 5000 rpm and drove slowly. The "check engine" light stays off. Did I cure the EGR valve or is temporary fix. Thanks.

The only help we can offer is with the actual code displayed. You will need to go back and have them scan it again, but this time write down the code

It will be displayed as such
P0402

A P and 4 digits. we need em all. If there is more than one code, write them all down

Just because a code names a sensor does not mean the sensor is bad. the actual code means the sensor did not report the correct, or expected data to the PCM, so it was flagged.

I get the code when the "check engine" light comes back again and will post the code. Thanks.

I got the code. Is P0401. Thanks.

Egr low flow detected.

Most likely from the 98 tubular header being cracked and leaking. If you hear a slight "chugga chugga chugga" with a ticking mixed in, it is the problem.

Replace the header and egr tube, I bet the code goes away.

I look under the hood and look like, replacing the EGR valve can be difficult.
I my be able to get the tube nut off and the first bolt on valve, but how to get the second one?. Big metal plate with sensor attach to it is on the way to the bolt. Any suggestions?. Look to me that I will have to remove part of manifold to get it out.

As Turdle stated, it could be the EGR tube, not the EGR valve. You already checked it and that appears to be working if it stumbled when you put suction to it. Are you getting the noise he asked about? And it's always best to soak bolts in PB blaster or some other lubricant beforehand.

This might help.

I do not hear any noises. The EGR valve was working - no "check engine" light- for a day and then the light come back. The other option that I am looking into it, that there is not enough vacuum. The vacuum is in the line, but my be not enough to operate the valve. There is small vacuum line going to the valve, but can not find "the other end". All at the firewall and kind of "crampy". I guess, that the Ford design the vehicle for v6 and stick v8 into that space.

I'd probably be looking at testing the DPFE and solonoid if the tube and manifold are solid.
