1999Fordexplorer rattle from engine

My name is Kymber from settle, I OWN A 1990 5 SPEED EXPLORER SPORT...have you ever heard the sound a spraycan shakin with a ball in it. Thats what im hearing more so when accselration up hills..iv changed oil n filter used thicker oil. Changed fuel filter iv been using high grade gas.......the sound also sounds like a loose lifter somtimes n its losing power up hills.

Depending upon the engine style it could actually be the timing chain tensioner for the sohc design or the actual lifters for the ohv design. or could also be oil pump. hope that helps. im going through the same thing on my 99 sohc! i have to pull the engine to replace the chains! if you have that you will realize its easier to sell the truck lol!

Is it a '90 or a '99? Your profile says '90.

If it's a '90 it's not a SOHC which has timing chain issues.

I would suggest cleaning your MAF:

The thread is for a later model, but it's the same basic procedure. You can use either the Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner as shown in the article, or Electronic Parts Cleaner. Do not use Brake Cleaner, or anything else that could leave residue.

I have to clean the MAF regularly on my '93 to keep it from knocking under hard acceleration. The engine knock or "ping" does sound sort of like a ball shaking in a paint can.
