1st Gen Air box drilling

I was wondering if anyone here has a 1st generation explorer that they have drilled the air box on. How do you get the airbox out and how many holes at what size should I do. I have seen a lot of people w/2nd gen. Ex's doing this but no 1st gens. Any help and pictures would be appreciated.

There's a thread on here somewhere that talks about this, I think the consensus was it's a bad idea since it would only let in hot air unless you duct the new holes somehow.
