2 12's for clarity, 4 10's to put some freakin bump in your trunk.....go with the 4 10's

what are you looking for in a system?
and what subs are you talking about?

I run 3 tens in my x and they both hit hard and sound good
Mike

yeah, in a good install anything will sound great. when i had the four 15" Orion subs, the sound quality was excellent. and of course they hit too hard to stay inside @ 2/3 volume.

pick up the august 2002 issue of Car Audio and Electronics. there is an article with a 2000 explorer sport. that truck has an awesome sq system with three memphis ST124D (12") subs. the whole cargo area is fiberglass and looks tight as hell

1 10" JL W7 will give you all that!!! ;)

Don

Yeah sorry i didnt mean to sound like the W7 would out perform that combination!

But many people are surprised at what the W7 can do!! I just meant that one W7 can be more then enough for most people.

4-10's HMmmm I like that number!

It depends on your enclosure, needs, and space requirements.

Obviously:
4-10's = 40" of air
2-12's = 24" of air

12's go a little deeper but you can make up for that with the enclosure.

Personally I prefer a sealed enclosure with 12's. But 4-10's would hit hard, so it depends on you....

Not to come down on you, but the math is wrong:

Circle surface area = PiR**2 (Pi R Squared)

In a rough estimate, since the cones aren't really flat:

Four 10" subs: 4 * (3.14 * 25) = 314 square inches of surface area
Two 12" subs: 2 * (3.14 * 36) = 226 square inches of surface area

After that, the actual volume of air moved will depend on the distance the cone can travel depending on whatever box you put it in.

Hope this helps.

You have to consider if you want to have any space whatsoever in your rear too. I onnly got 1 10 because I could use a lot of space but still have a butt load of bass. Also, do oyu know what kind of subs you want and how you are going to go about powering them? And what kind of enclosure? All things you need to consider. Me, I would say 2 12's in a box fit to over the fenderwells and as high as the back seat. That way you still have space to put stuff in your Explorer.

Beastb15, no offense man, but I have about 15-20
friends who have systems all 2 12's (kicker eclipse W3's Sony RF) (two with 3 12's) and my one 12' W7 makes all of their systems sound like they picked up 50 dollar subs and got the 2 12's just for looks. And my W7 only has 500 watts running into it. Oh yeah and for the people with the 3 12's..... hahahaha they wasted their money.

Honestly Jen, do not listen to anyone on this board or any other board (except Leenjen on this board). Go to stores and listen to whan 2 12's sound like and 4 10's sound like. Check out all different brands, but i would suggest you to check out Visonik and the Jl audio W7's and to stay the hell away from any amp or sub that Sony makes because they are all SHlT!!!!

Yes I will go check them out

Tom rocks my world.

Roadenforcer is right, only you can hear for yourself which subs you will kike the most. But at car audio shops you will most likely have the salesman there trying to tell you what they have is the "best". Don't be talked into something if you are not 100% sure about it. There are a lot of really good brands out there so why not listen to as many as possible to make the best decision?
