$20 Custom build cold air scoop on stock air intake system! Is this ok or even legal?

hey interesting air scoop >) i would agree with previous post that if it was flush with bumper looks would be an improvement
go to salvage yard some time u might find a stock bumper pipe from a car trans am or camaro u could use instead of that y pipe.
or if you are at the hardware store a floor register gavanized metal reqtangle to 3 or 4 inch round to mate up with your pipe coming down from air box < ill draw a picture if u dont know what those look like
ohhh no weres fluffy the cat ??? meow its in my intake pipe !!!! meow meow lol

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

im sorry, thats not polite.

BAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You probably came near me on your treck to scranton, good thing I didnt see that caus if I would of I would drove off the damn road caus I was laughing so hard.

the dr. is on speed dial

auuhhh thats ok im only nutts when im awake the rest of the time im as normal as anyone else here :help: :help:

Can't remember who it was, but I know someone here swiss cheese'd the bottom of their air box and wound up sealing off the holes later on because all the extra air flow was so hot that it was actually harming performance.

I did that.....
I was monitoring my intake temp with the scanguage and it hit 154F......

I restored the stock setup with a extra long tube reaching behind the headlight. IT made a big difference and restored the lost power.
I was looking for a cold air intake, but probably will make one. I was going to port it in through the fake louvers in the bumper (if they can be cut the let air in and are not blocked by steel cross bar). I want the wrap the pipe and intake to help fight off the heat soak. Even with headlights on once i get moving my intake temp drops until about 12 or so above ambient and fluctuates depending on speed. On highway its ambient temp all the way with headlights on or off.

My IAT is never more than 3 F over ambient at speeds over 40 MPH.

My IAT is never more than 3 F over ambient at speeds over 40 MPH.

oh yeah over 40 would keep my right at or just above ambient.
At slow congested speeds the 3rd Gen suffers from poor circulation or a very positvely pressured engine bay becuase of the clutch fan. This is probably pushing hot air out all low pressure points including headlight area where my intake is.

Update! Made it to GA! 900 miles :) No problems w/ air scoop even with constant rain.

Version 1.0 Conclusions

- The looks I get : Priceless!

Performance Characteristics :

Still had hesitation and a CEL after driving at Hwy speed for 300+ miles.

Obviously the new EGR valve and ECU were not helpful. :(

Got 22+ MPG on a 409 mile tankful with an extra 1000 lbs of people, canines and cargo. (Would have shot for 438 but I had family in the car and didn't want to run out of gas in front of them)

Conclusion: I would normally say inconclusive but with an extra 1000 lbs in the truck I'm leaning toward a success. I usually get 21.4 MPG with the hesitation and CEL when traveling by myself and with little cargo.

Rain management system was a complete success!
I do see wetness in the intake but never bogged down and do see water dripping out of built in drain holes. :D

Sheet metal and PVC ductwork held up fine. No collapses or blow outs! :)

Next Step-

1) Get rid of the hesitation and CEL on the Hwy! Anymore suggestions?

2) Create Version 2.0 and implement improvements and design changes:

a) Make scoop flush with trim beneath the bumper.

b) Create a waterless scoop system to alleviate rain water and puddle splashes from entry.

c) Create a larger intake into the Filter box.

d) Add a temp sensor to the Cold air intake to monitor the incoming air temp.

Any other suggestions?

Next step get rid of Hwy hesitation and build Version 2.0!

Your help is greatly appreciated!

:salute:

Whats the code your pulling from the CEL?

Great to hear your success on your CAI.

For now put a huge "type R" sticker on your scoop and people will stop staring.:D

If you recess your scoop a bit the truck itself will shield it from the rain. Put a couple of extra holes inyour airbox. Once the flow of water (if any) and air coming up into the box it will hit that larger volume of space and slow down. The water will not remain suspended and drop down into the box and drain out.

I would suggest doing something to hide that "scoop thing".

Good luck ...

Hi Yall,

Back at home, time for a nice cold beverage and some SEAFOAM SMOKE! :)

New EGC Valve, Wires, Plugs, PCM/ECU, same ol codes: :(

172
(R,M)
Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was lean - Single, Right or Rear HO2S - Fuel control

176
(M)
Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was lean Left or Front HO2S - Fuel control

542
(O,M)
Fuel pump open, bad ground or always on - - Power / Fuel Pump Circuits

What can be causing these codes? This phenomenom (Hesitation and CEL on Hwy) has been occuring since I got the truck 3+ years ago.

Can the 542 code (Fuel pump) be causing the 172, 176 codes?

I have seen alot of people replace o2 sensors and the problem doesn't go away.

Heck one guy on this forum has spent over $1700 at the dealership and they still can't fix it.

Lets prove that this forum has better info and knowledge than any dealership!

Avoid the CEL! Call Ghostbusters! Oh, got my Ads confused. (Post to Explorer forum) When it Absolutely, Positively Has to Be There, Overnite!

:D

Way to Go

Nice to see someone mind working even if people Laugh and snicker. The question if you do get the cold air in, the next problem will be to get the HOT air out like bigger and better exhaust pipes and a High flow Muffler. Keep up the good thinking I appreciate it and so do others...:salute:

Thanks for the positive comments! :)

It least I KNOW I'm CRAZY! Now others do too.

and so is the SUCTION SOUND over 3000 RPMs! :)

Save a Cat! Keep Fluffy inside. :D

My wife is waiting for it to snow. She calls the intake a 1) Snow Plow 2) Tire Shredder. I love her so. At least she tolerates me.

:)

NICE! any more power at hyway speeds? I am planning on relocating my filter behind the grill, but in front of the ratiator. has anyone done this? sweet.

Untill I unload all the people and sh*t out of the car I am not sure about having more power or not. I know I have more speed! Especially when coasting down hills. :)

It Sounds REALLY COOL when I punch it too! You can actually hear the noice from the throttle sucking air in above 3k rpms. It did seem to have more punch untill the hesitation kicks in. (Always been there when hot. Usually after a few hours at highway speeds)

The funny thing is the only time I "now" get the actual CEL to illuminate is when I am traveling up the mountains in Southern VA on I-77. It happens going both North and South. Elevation goes to over 2800 ft. I've tried everything, I just cant figure it out.

Can it be caused by my attempt to improve gas mileage by my shifting into Neutral going downhill? Nah its always been there, even before I got creative.

I actually coasted (In neutral) over 8 miles nonstop this morning on my way down the mountains. From mile marker #8 (I-77) VA to the first exit in NC.

I love passing cars in neutral, hit over 80 mph in a 65 and had to slooow it dooowwwn as I coasted down the mountain.

I guess you could say I "do" get 30 MPG ("Falling off a Cliff") LOL

Thats from a quote I saw on one of aldive's posts.

Thanks again for all the ideas, suggestions and feedback!
:salute:

Finally got to drive the truck with only myself and my stuff!

OK, I finally was able to let the truck sit for a few hours and got to go for a drive. I never got a chance to let it cool down in my 14 hour 900+ mile drive.

(Letting the truck sit for a few hours is the only thing to get rid of the slight "still there" hesitation after Hwy speeds)

I would say that the larger cold air intake Does give a performance boost!

You can actually Hear the intake sucking air at the higher RPMs. I also guess my sheet metal scoop actually acts as a bullhorn too. Or was it a snowplow?

I am gathering ideas for a supercharged version 2.0 with a larger exhaust system mod on a new thread.

Keep the ideas coming! A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

:salute:

glad to see you got some improvement with it

You Know before you were born they use to put the Fresh cool Air Scoops on the hood. You can still buy those type scoops and you wife will love the look over the snow plow..:salute:

I,m already working on Version 2.0 (Supercharged) Wife says no to a hood scoop. Waaa!

Thanks everybody for you Ideas, Feedback and comments!

I just floated the hood scoop idea by her and she said. "NO" :(

I will have to modify the scoop to be flush with the bumper trim (louver).

I now working on a blower unit from wally world. New blowers go for $30-$70.

They say they blow at 150, 200 or 250 MPH. This has got to give an improvement over the forced air scoop even at Hwy Speeds.

I am working on installing the blower assemby to the main belt to act as a Supercharger! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifugal_supercharger

Then I will enlarge the intake to the K&N filter in the airbox and modify the intake from the MAF to the TPS with some 4" PVC.

Then I will need a new exhaust sytem. I still think my hesitation could be a clogged Cat. It only acts up once she's HOT!

Keep em coming! Together we are stronger than when we Stand Alone.

:salute:

I have got to take a pic of "Fluffy the Cat" (Caught in the 9" Bumper AIR Scoop) before I disassemble Version 1.0

A mind is a terrible thing to Waste! Don't do SEAFOAM (Smoke) MMMMkay!
