200 or so HP possible??

Well, I think that would cost a little too much, I'd rather throw a 5.0 under the hood, because you can get so many performance parts for them, and the SOHC, all you can do is get airfilters, chips, and stuff like that, but the 5.0 you can get different manifolds, heads, and all that great stuff, and you could get over 300 horsepower out of it. You know what I good v-6 to swap in would be?? A new Jeep 4.0, those things kick ass. A friend that I work with took me somewhere, and that thing flys, and has power to get it to fly. I think he said it had somethin like 220 horsepower?? I would love to have that out of a stock engine.

My parents have owned 3 jeeps with that "high output" engine. Maintenance nightmare. They are always fixing something. And it sounds like crap right out of the showroom. If an explorer was making those kinds of noises, most of us would park it until we could fix it. Seems normal for the jeep engine though. I have to admit, when its working properly, it is an awesome engine.

The Jeep 4.0L is an inline 6, not a V6.

Reference to 200HP; K&N filter 4%, Hedders & Cat back exhaust 15%, Larger throttle body/or MAS-no advertised claim, Camm-10%. These are all advertised HP increases by the companies that sell the products, in reality you only will see a fraction of that advertised increase. Plus, you can't sum all the advertised increases together. My experience is that with all the above parts you may achieve 15-25% gain or close to 180-200 HP. You can only coax so much out of the stock block and heads. Real power only comes from Forced induction, NOS, or reworking the Long Block (higher compression; larger valves, ports, intake).

Im not sure if you guys have seen my project under the thread "Compression Ratio" but Im putting 98 Heads on my 94 (increasing my compression ratio to 10:1) and putting on new headers, lifters, and a larger throttle body. Im going to dyno the whole thing after Im done. :) Let you know if I get to 200HP. I sure hope so. :)

I noticed on your explorer info you had an MSD ignition system. What do you think? Did you notice a diffrence over premium wires and plugs? They are kind of pricy for "you might see a diffrence" advertised gains...

Nick; I posted my results under MSD. You can look up a more detailed report there. Yes, I did notice a small gain in MPG (+1). The MSD system with the Tac modules list for $400. (I paid $300 through Carparts.com). In my opinion, the small performace and milage improvement are not worth the added expense an the added complexity of the ignition. I purchased the ignition hoping that it would solve a nagging Pinging problem--it didn't. It sounds like your on the right track with your performance upgrades. I'm looking forward to hearing about the GAINS.

Any experience with the Jacobs Electronics Ingnition system? I was thinking about getting one just for kicks... I really dont know why. :) I could use the extra milage though. Im getting about 12.5 right now. But some of that is sitting around in the parking lot with my AC on... and remote starting my car all the time... Anyone have any numbers on what kind of milage they get in the summer with the AC on all the time? hmmm... okay... Also! Any bets to what my HP will be after all these mods? I dont know what Im at with my current mods... and im not going to dyno until I finish all my work... :)

You want 200+hp. Correct?

Read my thread on how I got nearly 250Hp for $1000. Under modified explorations.

250 Hp?

Needforspeed

"OK" I read your thread. Sounds good & looks good. However, I want to know if you documented any of the gains that you claimed? Inquireing minds want to know, did you do a baseline Dyno test ( $35 in Dallas ) and then a Dyno after each or even the whole set-up? After reading your other post it sounds like you are just adding up the advertised gain from each vendor, can't do that it doesn't work. The vendors use that new math and it never matches what you actually gain on the dyno. It helps sell stuff though. Let us know fact or fiction.

Thanks Rob

Dyno test results

Dyno test results will be available 2 weeks from today. I will be sure to share them. The point with my list of 7 is that they work incredibly well together getting the most of the Explorer. I can'y imagine life with even one of the 7 on my list.

I also found the absolute best price on each item and the best items bar none.

This is one hell of a shopping list.
Go get em.

Dyno Test

Needforspeed ( NFS )

Great News. I can't wait to see your results. It will be great to see how well this combo works togather. Also include any descriptions of SOP ( Seat of the Pants ) improvements, any milage gains, plus the Dyno results.

I applaude your efforts here. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Sure thing

You got it boss. I'll be sure to let you know what happens. The items are installed now and if it wings it could flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...............
