I currently own a 2000 xlt 5 litre AWD and have having some problems with valve noise. Rattles like crazy on 87 not so bad on 89 octane. Been using synthetic oil since I owned it. Has 167k miles. Other than that no problems. Tried the water injection method of removing carbon from the cylinders and that helped a little but to no avail. Marvel mystery oil helped a little. Could the lifters be worn? Or does this something more serious. Usually happens under accerlation and when its cold. Doesent sould like piston skirt wear as it makes the noise hot or cold. Thanks in advance .

Given the fact that with higher octane the noise diminishes it is detonation, not a problem with the valve train.

When is the last time you changed spark plugs? Also Seafoam works much better for removing the carbon.

After doing some research on here it seems like the place to start. Im currently searching for a seafoam supplier in the Ft Worth area. Hopefully auto zone or oriellys carrys it Thanks.

Are you sure its not the exhaust manifold leaking "tick tick tick"?

I even checked the egr tube thinking it was cracked but it wasnt. It even makes the valve noise while cold at initial startup even afer idiling for about a minute. When I drive away the valves begin to rattle. then settles down after warmup then will come back under load or heavy acceleration. I found that oriellys in my area carries the seafoam so I will start there as well as a plug change and see how that helps.

For the longest time i could have sworn that I had valve train noise. Same symptoms as you're having to a T. Finally I tore into things a bit, and the drivers side exhaust manifold had a pinhole leak. Definitely worth checking into. Otherwise, seafoam is good stuff.

If you have an exhaust leak the Seafoam treatment will show where the exhaust leak is.

I have been watching the videos on youtube Ibet it will show where the leak is. How much do I use. A full can or a third? I read a post where a guy did it 3 times from the same can with a rest period of about 15 mins between each treatment?

I did the sea foam treatment. It has helped out but I still get the noise form one cylinder. Spark plugs are next then some more marvel mystery oil in the crankcase for one more oil change along with a compression check to locate the offending cylinder. Next step is after that is a new set of lifters. Thanks to all for your help.
