2000 ford explorer xlt
Hi I'm new here and could use a little help. The other day I was out and put the truck in park. When I tried to leave it wouldn't shift out of park. I did some quick research and found it was the #9 fuse changed it and it shifted. When I got home and parked I tried to shift out of park and same thing. Now the only way I can get out of park is changing this fuse. First question is is there an override button on a 2000 xlt? Second what could this be? Sidenote about 6 weeks ago my brake lights went out. The one above the taillight was working tho. I took to a guy and he got them working. I have very limited funds so I can't take it to a shop. I can do some basic things on my own with help from videos. Idk of that has anything to do with what's happening now. Brake lights are working. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

The circuit protected by #9 fuse is pulling more load than what the rated fuse can handle (all by design, safety), now, we must find the reason for the higher than design load for fuse #9, If you are mechanically inclined and have a basic DVM (digital volt meter) you can find the problem, however it will take time and effort, and a factory service manual with wiring schematic will needed, the manual is not absolutely necessary, but extremity helpful. First thing first is to find out what all components on the #9 circuit has in place to supply power to. The reason for the fuse blowing out could be anything from a shorted electrical component, or a chaffed wire touching a body ground.

Thank you I will poke around and see if I see any wires that could be problematic. I'm also thinking about just breaking the little latch that locks the shifter in place. I've read that its really a safety thing for people with kids. It looks like that fuse is only for the shift lock mechanism so I could do that and remove the fuse completely.

Just in case you didnt have a wiring diag, I uploaded this, it is for a 1997 Explorer, it might be similar to a 2000 but be warned ford changed things all the time.

Pretty simple really, however the colors in your car might be different.

you have two threads going for this FYI I would merge them if I knew how

Gonna close this one to avoid further confusion.
