2000 Mercury Mountaineer AWD

The only problem is that this is his friend and im sure his friend was expecting this to be an easy sell especially with the high pressure sales going on even to the point of getting the wives involved. I have a feeling your going to lose this friendship or not have this friendship be what it once was because of this vehicle. Just walk away and look for something else.

$250

Kinda looking for a second vehicle about 3 months ago I was $250 lower than the used car guy wanted to sell it for. I walked out. Became uninterested and got a call 4 days later matching the price I was asking. Like I said by that time I was uninterested in the car.

Oh and if nothing else pull the same tricks on them they pull on us. I have to run that by my . . . first. Oh and for the record they REALLY hate it when you say this is all the money I can afford to put into a car I have to pay other bills as well you know.

Last time I got a new car I made them figure all the other items that get added on, extras, tax, financing, ect. worked off that price instead of just the vehicle.

If you're going to finance the truck and you have good credit, use www.peoplefirst.com. You plug in all the info over the internet, they priority mail you a "Blank Check" that you fill out at the dealer for whatever amount the car will be, including taxes and tags, and that will be your loan amount, even if it is slightly less or more than the amount you applied for. It works like a cash deal with the dealer. They have good interest rates too, and do not require any downpayment.

Always have your financing or lease in order before you go to pick up the car, and then give them a chance to beat it, or don't if you dont want to. Be very careful when looking over their offer though, because they can still trick you, especially if its a lease. It may require some kind of downpayment, end finance baloon payment or something that makes the payment artificially low so they can sucker you on a higher interest rate.

I havent used dealership financing since my 95 Cadillac STS leased through GMAC SmartLease because they had a special money factor (interest rate) I always use a bank, credit union, special leasing company etc.

Wow!...nicely done on the buy XLT 98'! Thats what I'm doin....waitin it out. He called today and was talking to my wife. I was gone. He tried the same "math" on my wife. "Yup, $2k trade for the Jeep brings us down to $16k....right where ya wanta be!".

Man I already told him $16k was my tops. You really got a good deal.

The friendship thing is no big deal to me. Idon't know him all that well. My wife knows his wife from kids in school. No biggie.

I'll check out the finance this Monday. I'm re-financing my house and I'm getting some extra for a Mounty purchase. The rest is is savings and tax return.

Well, I'll just wait him out. I would really like this one. I hope I can pull it off at the end of the month or sooner. I just thot also. I'm a repeat buyer from this place. In 94' I bought a 93' Pickup here. He wasn't there. It's changed hands but none-the-less! I'll mention that.

The refinance on the house is also a very smart way to do a new vehicle purchase right now.

I hate it when car salesmen go and use extraneous factors and then figure them into your deal. When I turned my leased Cadillac STS in, I almost leased a new one. I couldnt make the dumb saleswoman understand that the $1,000 customer loyalty bonus that I had with me (it was mailed to me) was not to be factored into the price workup. I wanted the car for a specific dicount, then I would use the loyalty cash as a downpayment on the lease, it was NOT part of the deal she and I were forming. I finally just walked, thats when I shopped Benz, BMW and Lexus, and finally wound up with my LS400.

Tell him "I said the price needed to be $16,000. That means, you and I need to sign on the fact that we have agreed that I will purchase the car for $16,000, THEN we can talk about the trade. The trade is NOT part of the purchase price we're negotiating. If thats too hard for you to deal with, then we'll take my Jeep right off the table and I'll sell it myself, but that wont change the fact that you need to come down to $16,000 or we have no deal, any other offer is just a waste of our time, can you sell the truck for $16,000 independant of my trade?"

wait for his answer, if he says yes, take it.

If he says no, then say "Call me when you can" and get up and leave.

Yeah......like Stephen said.

Try telling him that "We are working on 3 separate transactions here: Vechicle price, Trade in value, and Financing" (or less if you have no trade....)

Hi Guys,

Nothing new to report. The salesman called me yesterday and just said the same thing. Give me $2k for the Jeep + $16K. I said no...I will give ya $16K without the Jeep. No go. I'll keep posting. We were going to go look around this weekend with cash in hand but we just got dumped on (finally got some snow!!!!) so we might go goof around instead.

My wife, after driving the Merc for a while, really wishes we had the outfit now....but I ain't gonna cave! I'm still thinking at the end of the month that we will see a break in the action.

I'll wait for his move first then I might say, "If you want the Jeep so bad, give me $3500 for it!" $18K (he is asking) - $3.5K = $14.5K out of my pocket rather than $14K which is what I started with. I could do that. But nothing less. Whadya think? I know it's higher than what XLT 98 paid. He done good!

Thanks again for all the info.

Hi Guys,

Still haven't heard back from the salesman. It was left at, I would give $16,000 cash no trade. Figured he would have called back by now. Oh well, not the end of the month yet. It's still there. Checked last nite.

I'm gonna call on Friday. I'll give'em 160, $100 dollar bills. Would be a perfect fit in a till for the end of the month.
