Ok, I've actually been a member for awhile and reading some of the articles, etc (very helpful, btw), but I've run into a bit of a concern lately and thought I would see if any of you guys have had any similar problems.

I have a 2000 XLS with about 110K miles, 4.0 OHV, pretty standard. About 3 months ago, I noticed the shifts, especially in the 1 thru 3 gears, were getting a little rough and uneven, so I took the truck in, and had the trans flushed a little eariler than scheduled. However, the problem never really went away, and now I have the lovely check engine light on. Oddly enough, when the light came on, the shifting improved. I have read that the "auto" 4wd setting is really more like a traction control, especially at low speed, and I was wondering if the rough shifting I was experience could be related to a transfer case issue. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. I'll go and get the codes pulled as soon as work allows it. Thanks in advance for the help.

I think that the transfer case issues would feel different than your description, but you should check this thread to see if it sounds familiar.

You should find out the code(s) set ASAP. Transfer case issues should set a GEM code which would cause a flashing 4wd light, not a Check Engine light. However (if you have lived a good clean life and you are also very lucky) it could be something as simple (and relatively cheap) as a bad TPS that is causing the harsh shifting.

Ok, just to update the issues...the CEL and the slippage were unrelated. The CEL was a lower bank 2 intake gasket leak. So now I am searching for the recall/service advisory information. My regular mechanic said that it popped up in his computer and that I should check into whether or not the stealership will do the work for free/reduced.

I had the front end realigned and the tires rebalanced, that seems to have helped tremendously with the slippage.
