2001 Explorer towing

Huh, never drove one so I don't have a personal opinion on it. But a buddy has a cummins with a stick, he loves it. But then again, he loves Acura as well....

What makes 1st gear useless?

Available diesel torque and higher rear gearing. You can start from stop in second gear (when not towing).

Exactly, when you are not towing in a Cummins Ram, you are basically driving a 4 speed with wide ratios between gears since first is a granny start. I hate 5 speeds on diesel pickups. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not against manual transmissions on a diesel, I just prefer to have at least 9 forward gears.

Im going to start looking for a F250 Or F350 with a 351 V8 I would not tow the camper all the much for a big 7.3l im not a fan of Chevy at all and I like Cummings but Dodge Auto trans are not so good thank you for your help safe to say the old explorer is not towing anything
