This is a question that I'm sure that Jamie and the Dons can shed some light on. What are the different names of these two types of PCMs? Also the year that Ford switched over to the newer type and was the switchover a different year based on model. Below is a picture of the early type that looks like what I took out of the 2002 Sport Trac this past Sunday and the 2nd picture is of one out of a 2005. Thanks for any information.

For what I can read the only difference is the connectors the processor chip is the same 1 has a little more ram than the other 1 Not much like an upgraded desktop
a link the Wikipedia below

Somewhere I read that on the 2005 PCM, one of the three plugs was referred to as the body plug?

Did the sport trac switch to can bus the same time the explorer did? Ford varied the switch by model, some started in 2003.

Newer computer is can-bus. All Fords switched to it between 03-05 depending on model. Two totally different systems.

Well now hold on there dudes, I have a 05 Ranger with this style of PCM and it STILL had the 42 pin C115 connector and the rest of the systems in the truck were compatible with the older style 5.0 PCM
Now in 06 the ranger went full blown CAN BUS and 75% of the drivetrain wires and dash wires went bye bye, no longer compatible
So even though this PCM looks like a full blown CAN BUS switch over depending on what you are trying to accomplish, it may still work?

The PCM's have names for each series, like the 95-01 Explorer is 2nd gen etc. The 2014 PCM is called a Copperhead series, the list I saw looked like there were about six different names in the OBDII 1996+ run up to the latest year.

The 2014 PCM I bought looks just like that 05 pictured above. The right connector is for the engine harness, the middle one goes to the trans, and the left one I presume goes into the engine bay harness.

Are 2004 explorer V6
Is both MS can HS can That's what the little switch is for on the elm adapter
Half of the systems are one and half the systems are the other
It's the only year I've come across this
