just bought my son his first 2002 explorer xls, spoke to owner who is my neighbor of ten years. he told me all the issues, the truck needs TLC, that I can do for nothing. but the V6 4.0 engine needs help, 140000 miles and it has the original plugs, wires, pvc valve and stuff. we changed the oil and 5 quarts came out 5 quarts went in. what plugs are recommended for this truck, I also noticed the tranny is sealed, should I drop the pan and replace filter? where the hell is the PVC valve ??? and if I missed something please let me know all help is greatly appreciated.

Motorcraft plugs, drop the pan and replace filter and fluid, there's a how to in the transmission sub-forum. Best wishes.

If it's 4x4 do the t-case fluid as well. Axles too.

Replace all of the follow basic tune up items, especially if there is no record of them being replaced recently.

The only spark plugs I recommend: MOTORCRAFT SP500 http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=949946

The only oil filter I recommend: MOTORCRAFT FL820S http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=383539 (Most Walmart's and OReilly's sell these)

The only air filter I recommend: MOTORCRAFT FA1695 http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=383434

The only fuel filter I recommend: MOTORCRAFT FG1036 http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=383476

The only belt I recommend: CONTINENTAL 4060855 http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1332875

Also check the headlight bulbs, if they're old they're probably quite dim. Get whatever bulbs you like on that I guess, if it were me I'd do the small modification to upgrade to Philips HIR bulbs. You don't do any modification to the vehicle, just have to trim some tabs on the bulbs for them to fit. Here are the instructions: http://store.candlepower.com/mohirbuba.html

Check wipers, if need replaced it's a good time to upgrade to beam style. MOTORCRAFT WW2201PF http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=3098061

If the front turn signal bulbs are cracking and peeling their paint away replace them with these not painted true amber glass ones: http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=318987 | https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C920CA/

Note: Forgot to put 2 wiper blades in that price quote.
